About this listen

If you have found this book, the end of the world has already begun. Something lies hidden in the remote wilderness. It is unremarkable in appearance yet beautiful in purpose. It is intelligent yet not human. It is a gift. But gifts always come at a price.

It’s 1868. Gentleman naturalist Samuel Inwood is fulfilling his dream of exploring Dutch New Guinea when things go horribly wrong. A savage aboriginal tribe takes him captive, and as Samuel fights to survive, he begins to doubt that he is the civilized man he had thought himself to be. But his personal concerns suddenly become trivial when he realizes the tribe is harboring the greatest discovery in history, and he finds himself solely responsible for the future of all humanity.

Losing his sanity and stripped of his dignity, Samuel finds solace in writing of his horrors and revelations in his field notebook. The more he learns of his captors and the secret they hold, the more his written words become a warning to the rest of the world. It is a warning he hopes no one will ever have to heed.

If you have found this book, it is too late. The end of the world has already begun. Are you prepared to face what the new world might bring? Savage is pure adventure, reminiscent of the classic tales of Edgar Rice Burroughs and Jules Verne.

I've read a lot of Stan C Smith's work, including the Bridgers and Across Horizons series, and he has a real talent for thinking up big ideas and surrounding them with interesting characters. He writes rip-roaring, enjoyable adventures like perhaps no one else. This story is an excellent example of his ability to pull the reader (listener, in this case) into a world of adventure, and I highly recommend it. The narration is also extremely well-done, the narrator's clipped English accent lending itself to the slightly anachronistic language used in this found journal from a Victorian explorer. Hats off to Smith for managing to strike the fine balance between authentic Victorian writing and modern sensibilities. I look forward to the release of more of his work in Audible form.

Great ideas surrounded by interesting characters

Stan C Smith is an author that I love. His stories are always imaginative and interesting avoiding the usual tropes of sci-fi and speculative fiction. Savage, although set in the past, is an excellent example of this as the tale unfolds through the diary of the main protagonist Samuel Inwood. The author captures the tone, and some of the out-dated notions, of a man from the 1860's. Along the way we see him travel to Dutch New Guinea, interact with the native peoples there, explore the land and come face to face with the darker side of that place. With this being a Stan C Smith story it, of course, features much much more and Samuel has some experiences that change his world view drastically. Savage is fiction at its best as it asks us to look at the world, past and present, from a new perspective and maybe question where we fit into the overall story.
Michael James Bell reads the story with skill and talent. I'd go so far as to say he is the perfect narrator for the story. There are a great deal of differing accents and languages throughout the novel and he handles them all extremely well, not least the English gentleman Inwood himself. Overall, a great story matched with the perfect narrator.

A Perfect Match Of Story & Narrator.
