About this listen

Fear haunts the streets of London after the assassination of a protestant Prince, and the recurrence of the plague.

Giordano Bruno suspects someone is following him, but on confronting his stalker, he realizes it is the woman he once loved – she is on the run, accused of murder.

Bruno travels to Canterbury to help clear her name, instructed by Sir Francis Walsingham to also search for the assassin in the shadow of England’s holiest shrine…

Critic reviews

"Impossible to resist…Parris creates a convincing sense of the past, woven with so much intrigue that the head fairly spins." ( Daily Telegraph)
"Parris writes with confident ease of Tudor London.… The dialogue balances nicely on a tightrope of period phrases and cut-to-the-chase colloquialisms." ( The Times)

Great historical novel, I also downloaded the audio version, as it was on special when you bought the book, it can be quite soothing listening and really ready for the next novel, but hope the author will get rid of Sophia, as, I think she is a distraction, but the way the book ends I think she will be popping back up again which is a shame. I think it must be quite hard in the1600 century to solve the crime as a lot of it must be guesswork, and common sense, however its certainly different to today's crime-busting,

The series of SJ Paris books are excellent!! They are really well researched historically and very realistic.

Excellent book!

Enjoyed the book, but it seemed to drag on at the end and I struggled to make it to the end.

Good story

Would you listen to Sacrilege again? Why?

The story flows well and it is well narrated. There is something in it that pushed me to listen more every time even though I had something more pressing on my schedule.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Giordano Bruno, of course. The other characters were either not much likeable or they did not occure in the story for enough long time.

What does Laurence Kennedy bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

The foreign accent was quite nice to listen to, although I am not too sure of its authenticity being a foreigner towards English myself. The narration was very comprehensible, there was no struggle for me at any point.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Well, perhaps in two sittings :-)

Any additional comments?

I am gonna listen other books from this series soon. Looking forward to it!

Well written and entertaining

…the narrator needs to read the passage through first, or, if he already does, needs to do it more often! There are a few jarring moments when either his pronunciation or emphasis causes the listener to realise that he doesn’t have the full meaning of the narrative, so does not give it its full weight… but otherwise an enjoyable tale of twists and turns.

Love the stories but…
