About this listen

From USA Today and Amazon Charts bestselling author Meghan Quinn comes a heartfelt romantic comedy about new beginnings and finding the romanticized happily ever after in the most unlikely of places.

Hollywood screenwriter Sawyer Walsh knows a good love story when he sees it. But when it comes to real life romance, he’s a mess. That’s how he finds himself standing at the altar…as his ex-girlfriend ties the knot with his very famous best friend. The pressure, the resentment, the media coverage—it’s all too much—and before he knows exactly what he’s doing, he’s making a run for it, leaving a shocked congregation and flashing cameras in his wake.

Needing to lie low amid the media fallout, Sawyer lands in the charming town of Canoodle, California, where he crosses paths with Fallon Long, who runs the Canoodle Cove Cabins, a family-owned business and Sawyer’s new short-term residence. Overwhelmed with renovations and her long list of responsibilities, Fallon is struggling to make ends meet while attempting to bring the cabins back to their original glory. So when Sawyer arrives, she is grateful for the income, but immediately writes him off as just another vapid Hollywood hack, until he begins to prove her wrong at every turn.

As Fallon comes closer to saving the family business, an undeniable bond forms between her and the handsome screenwriter. But the pressures of her family obligations and Sawyer’s notoriety might prove to be too much for anyone to handle. Could Canoodle be the setting for a new romance—or is true love just a Hollywood cliché?

Critic reviews

“A diverse cast, solid friendships, and some laugh-out-loud moments only enhance proceedings. This is sure to please.”Publishers Weekly

“The supporting characters give this slow-burn romance from Quinn (The Reunion) a healthy dose of humor and heart and make this story one to include in all romance collections.”Library Journal

I had high hopes for this book. There was the basis for a good story, but it just got too cheesy and predictable. Easy beach read.

Too corny

But in the middle, it became just too predictable, boring, slow and, idk, yawn worthy.
I love the first half of the book. Lovely build up and Quinn really made me care for the characters. Then it felt like page fillers. Felt like Quinn needed a conflict to make story more interesting but didn’t quite pull it off.
And the end, well, we knew the end. No surprise there.

Good beginning and end

If you like slow burn then you will like this one. It’s very slow burn. Slow to the point of almost being at a standstill. If I wasn’t so invested in the characters then I think I would have given up. The comedy is sporadic but the sweetness is fairly constant.

The premise for the story is great, and starts of really funny, with Sawyer running from the wedding of his ex gf and ex best mate, and making a bit of a show of himself in the process and going viral. Of course everyone has an opinion based on what they think is the real story so when he ends up in Canoodle, a small quirky town with great characters, he’s in for a bit of a tough time. Because the reader/listener knows the real story from the outset you have nothing but sympathy and support for Sawyer, and he doesn’t let us down; he’s a great book boyfriend. Fallon is also a great FMC as she is loving, determined and strong throughout. There is a great cast of supporting characters, Sully in particular is a favourite as the grumpy but vulnerable and extremely loveable grandad. However I really didn’t like Jaz. I think she’s a terrible character. She is actually a bully, and the way she treats Sawyer throughout goes way beyond loyal best friend of Fallon. The way she objectifies him at one point made me uncomfortable, and if this had been a man saying the same to a woman it would have had some sort of redress, this never came. Also her behaviour at the end was dreadful, judgmental and cruel. If the author was going for tough but fair then I think she missed the mark.

The story plods along, is extremely predictable, and extremely plodding. The original boyfriend was around far too long, the dads seemed to be bit part players for the sake of it, and unnecessary.

If you like slow slow burn and predictable then go for it, but there are better Meghan Quinn books out there, although Sawyer is probably one of the best male characters, just a shame he is wasted on this book.

The narrators were great though, and I think if I was reading this rather than listening to it then I would have given up. The narrators made it worth listening in to.

Very predictable and very slow burn
