Shadowvale isn’t typical small-town America. The sun never shines, the gates decide who enters, magic abounds, and every resident bears some kind of curse. No one knows this as well as raven shifter Deacon Evermore, who, like everyone in his family, has a curse. While his position as Shadowvale’s peacekeeper lets him use that curse for good, he’d rather live anywhere else. He stays for his family but doubts he can last much longer.

A Perfect Stand-alone Novel for Fans of the Miss Fortune Genre
If, like me, you’re a big fan of the Miss Fortune series by Ms DeLeon, this will hit the spot for a continued sojourn in the Bayou area! With equally colourful characters and a strong, intelligent female heroine, this novel tells a story from a slightly different perspective!
Gaiterbait is a town even smaller than Sinful, but paradoxically, just as sprawling. Everyone knows everyone and therefore it’s impossible to keep secrets. Or is it? It transpires that this small, unheard of town has more secrets than you can shake a stick at!
Read. Enjoy!

Not a Patch on the Miss Fortune Series.
Having run out of the Miss Fortune series, I thought I would try another by the same author.
Yes, there are 'gators, bayous, a cafe, a baddie, a sheriff, a deputy, a DA agent and Paster Don...but that's about it.
The characters are thinly drawn, the female lead is not credible (my daughter who was listening with me, kept saying, "Yeah, right!", when more of her backstory came out.
Couple of er, 'graphic scenes' between the lead female and lead male, which read awkwardly in the context.
Feels like something the author wrote in her teens, or is a set of notes for a proper book.
Stick to Miss Fortune series, and long may she continue!

Slow start but once it get moving, hold on tight!
It starts with an alligator bang but then lulls a bit as you meet the lead characters and I thought these 2 wouldn't hold my interest enough. I was wrong. In addition to some exceptional supporting characters the plot begins to wind and twist so seamlessly. I thought I'd figured it all out about 5 times before I actually found out who dunnit. The narrator totally fit the book too, I would happily listen to her again. Another great story involving a whole community from Jana DeLeon.

I wanted a snack and got a meal
I snatched this as a snack to tide me over on the painful wait for the long delayed audiobooks for the last two Fortune books. Instead of a snack I got a nice tasty meal!
I loved the story, the characters, the voices, so much that I was sneaking time where I could to listen to more of this book such as cooking and installing software updates, eschewing TV shows and even putting off listening to a new book in my all-time favorite series that dropped while I was in the middle of this book.
I am fan of romantic crime dramedies and a sucker for a smart, kick-butt female lead with an attitude and this book scratched that itch. Some people might gripe that it is a bit formulaic but if you love the genre then you enjoy that. You have your crime and your meet-cute... strap in and enjoy the ride.

great story, bad narration
This book had all the makings of a typical, wonderful Jana DeLeon book. Where it fell short was the narration. At times, I missed what was being read because of how it was being read.....too breathy and distracting.
I loved the cast of characters. As usual, there is that one quirky character that keeps you guessing what they will do next. I also love the strength of the female protagonist. Jana is a master (or should I say mistress) of strong female characters which make us all try a bit harder.
Overall, it was a great story. I hope there will be more in this "series".

Honestly, it’s not the narrator’s fault....
......I blame the producers for the low narrator rating. WHY WHY WHY do they think people in Louisiana have Georgia-Southern accents? NOBODY in Louisiana sounds anything like this, and especially not people who live a mile from the gulf. Johanna Parker is an excellent reader, one I’ve enjoyed in other series. She’s just wrong for this book. I’ve given up hoping for a female reader who does justice to the South Louisiana voice, but would gladly settle for a generic no-discernible-accent voice over generic southern.
But if you aren’t from around here, or if you can just pretend that the setting is actually some mythical alternative universe, it’s an unusually good cosy mystery. How can you not love a book that opens with a stoned alligator in the town drunk’s swimming pool! The main character, Dorie, is an original, smart, unconventional, and highly respected, and the supporting cast is quirky and fun. Plenty of humor - Dorie is the queen of the sarcastic put-down and the stuffed-shirt DEA agent is asking for it. The mystery kept me guessing; I suspected just about everyone at one point or another and kept being hit with twists I hadn’t seen coming. Yay, Jana Deleon!
A couple of explicit sex scenes - steamy if you like that kind of thing, easily skipped over if you don’t.

A Fun Light Read
The A Miss Fortune Mystery series was better in terms of the development of the story and characters if a little slow but this book still had some very funny moments. Overall I enjoyed it and if sex scenes bother you I think there were only two. They were both obvious, fairly short and easy to skip through. This was a fun light read.

I have no idea how I missed this in print. Because it is an absolutely hysterical story. I loove Dory’s character and how everybody keeps underestimating her. She’s pretty dang awesome and also really liked Joe. Took a bit for Richard to grow on me.

NOT a cozy. Bad language, sex etc unecessary!
This book was a complete disappointment a thought I was going to be listening to one of the cozy bayou mysteries. I got quite a surprise with the gratuitous file language for absolutely no reason, and the descriptive sexual scenes that were also unnecessary. Not one of the cozy mysteries I thought it would be. Very disappointed.

Good book
I enjoyed the book but kept thinking I had heard it before because of the similarities to the authors other works. So if you like her other work you'll like this...just don't be surprised if you feel deja Vu.
Unrelated, as someone from that part of the world I was tickled pink to hear towns and places I know referenced.
