About this listen

On the planet Summa Nulla (crossroads of the galaxy, high point of nothing) someone is manipulating the media. And Ruby, smart, tough, sexy detective that she is, is hired to track down the male-factors. The swinging Andriod Sisters perform speak-satirical songs as Ruby, the funny, fast-paced galactic gumshoe, encounters some pretty weird planetary inhabitants on her quest for truth and the intergalactic way.

A full cast production.

As the summary says, this is a full cast production, an audio drama with more than one voice actor. It also somewhat resembles opera or musical in that the individual chapters / dialogues are narrated / played on top of a song / soundscape each. (To make that clear, the dialogue still remains just that - it is, for the most part, not sung, nor does it rhyme, even if sometimes its rhythm may playfully interact with that of a song.)

I found this combination to be very enjoyable, and to boost the book's replay value immensely.

The subject matter is somewhat tongue in cheek sci-fi. Its for the most part light tone, the music, the exaggerated but mostly lovable characters, and the fact that the production seems more concerned with mood than with every last bit making perfect sense and every loose end being tied up make for easy listening and amusing entertainment, if not necessarily for a vast intellectual challenge.

The music is fun and usually suits the dialogue it goes with, and the voice talent is well chosen. The concept is a nice break from regular audiobooks.

The "book" convinced me enough to buy several more "Rubys", of which this is the best so far (especially compared to later ones that are longer, having lots of "dry spells" with no songs, and don't beef up on the story to make up for it).

"A good one."
