Story
An off-duty coast guardsman is fishing with his family when he calls in some suspicious behaviour from a nearby boat. It's a snazzy craft, slick and outfitted with extra horsepower, and is zipping along until it slows to pick up a surfaced diver...a diver who was apparently alone, without his own boat, in the middle of the ocean. None of it makes sense, and his hunch is proved right when all three guardsmen who come out to investigate are shot and killed.

Summary
Virgil Flowers heads north to solve a puzzling murder - and finds that the country is very rough indeed. While competing in a fishing tournament in a remote area of northern Minnesota, Flowers gets a call from Lucas Davenport asking him to investigate a murder at a nearby resort, where a woman has been shot while kayaking. The resort is for women only: a place to relax, get fit, recover from plastic surger,y and commune with nature.
As Flowers starts to ask questions, he finds a web of connections between the people at the resort, the victim and some local women, notably a talented country singer. And the more he digs, the more he discovers the resort to be a hotbed of jealousy, blackmail, greed, anger, and fear.
Then he discovers that this is not the first murder, that there was a second, seemingly unrelated killing the year before - and that there's about to be a third, definitely related one, any time now. As for the fourth...well, Virgil had better hope he can catch the killer before that happens. Because it could be his own.

Enjoyable if slightly unbelievable
I am a big fan of John Sandford and I have really enjoyed the new Virgil Flowers series- but Rough Country is a little 'out there'; it starts off well with an intriguing murder, gets busy with the plot, then unfortunately starts to get tangled up in its own cleverness and then trips over its own feet. The climax, when it comes, is a little too predictable, a little too overworked. That being said, its not a bad yarn, I just don't think this is Sandford's best book- Shockwave, the sequel, is a lot better and is a great return to form.
Eric Conger, as always, delivers on the narration, giving a slick rendition of a slightly trite story.

Disappointed
Cannot believe this is a John Sandford novel.
The experience of listening to Lucas Davenport books is by fat more enjoyable.
To add more to this, I already returned a Virgil Flowers novel, for the same reasons and thought it was an exception, I got to realize it wasn't.

After reading John Sandford's books some time ago
After reading John Sandford's books some time ago I am now working my way through them again via audio books. I had forgetten how enjoyable his work is and Eric Canger did a great job narrating. This one is from the Virgil Flowers series and starts with the murder of a woman who was staying at a remote resort frequented by the Lesbian community. But that is only the tip of the iceberg as Virgil discovers more murders and some older murders that all seem to be interlinked with a buxom and popular country singer. An entertaining story story from start to finish and a top tier effort from John Sandford.
