About this listen

In America, demons wear white hoods.

In 1915, The Birth of a Nation casts a spell across America, swelling the Klan's ranks and drinking deep from the darkest thoughts of white folk. All across the nation they ride, spreading fear and violence among the vulnerable. They plan to bring hell to Earth. But even Ku Kluxes can die.

Standing in their way are Maryse Boudreaux and her fellow resistance fighters, a foulmouthed sharpshooter and a Harlem Hellfighter. Armed with blade, bullet, and bomb, they hunt their hunters and send the Klan's demons straight to hell. But something awful's brewing in Macon, and the war on hell is about to heat up.

Can Maryse stop the Klan before it ends the world?

Narrator was fantastic - good voices not overdone, including for strong dialects, and more passion in the musical parts than I've normally heard.

Story was definitely an original and clever concept, but I wasn't impressed by how it was developed. For me, if the moral lessons were less plainly spelled out, it would have inspired more reflection and it also wouldn't have had such a cheesy feel.. At the same time, maybe that was intentional to reach a broader audience.

The band of main heroes filling the familiar tropes, the humor and action blended in such a way, and the above described cheesiness - all makes it feel like a comic book. A good one to be sure, with the original story idea! But not a novel to stick with me.

Nice comic book in novel form

This was bloody brilliant!

The only thing I could have wanted was more.

A rip-roaring romp with heart of resistance fighters taking on supernatural Ku Klux Klan and various elements of fascinating folklore.

I don't really know what to say beyond this being some fantastic horror action pulp goodness.

I had a lot of fun.

The Channie Waites audiobook narration is absolutely sublime!

Such a wicked spin on the KKK but done so well and the story is gripping. It delves into fantasy and the supernatural so don’t think it’s just a hack and slash tale, but it’s so well written and told. Channie Waites is AMAZING as the narrator, blows every other performer out of the water. PLEASE LISTEN TO THIS BOOK

Incredibly Original and Damn Good!

Outstanding and visceral novella featuring demon hunters taking on the Ku Klux Klan, an army of demons and monsters spreading racism, hate and rage. Maryse is a sword wielding warrior, taking on the threat with the help of her friends Sadie, a fast talking fighter and the weapon making Chef, three black women in an epic struggle against the forces that threaten them, their people and the rest of her world. Filled with magic and set against the backdrop of the release of the deeply racist motion picture the Birth of a Nation in 1915, this is a fantastical ride of a story, with strong lead characters, grotesquely drawn villains and lots of meat, mouths and blood. As Maryse faces a terrible future and loss in her past, she will be confronted with twists, turns and face off with an unseen and veiled series of foes.

Triumphant and cathartic storytelling about resistance drawn with by a vivid imagination
