Andy Hamilton's complete 4th Series of this comedy winner from Radio 4. Satan's got the health inspector in and it seems that the lighting in hell isn't up to scratch but that's the least of his worries, with bad Feng-Shui, no sleep and some atrocious poetry not even Helen of Troy can perk up his day. Story
The story so far: unfortunately, Burrows, the leader of the colony, has died on the voyage, so his number two, Brian (Nicholas Lyndhurst), is now in charge. He's a nice enough chap but no alpha male, and his desire to sort things out with a nice friendly meeting infuriates the colony's chief physician, Lillian (Vicki Pepperdine), who'd really rather everyone was walking round in tight colour-coded tunics and saluting each other. She's also in charge of Project Adam, the plan to conceive and give birth to the first colony-born baby.

Summary
All four series of the hilarious historical sitcom set just before and during the American Revolution.
Baltimore, 1770, and shopkeeper Samuel Oliphant has much to worry about. Storm clouds are gathering, business is bad and to make matters worse, he’s been forced to play host to two British soldiers. Hapless officer Captain Brimshaw is decent enough, but his fellow redcoat - the one-eyed, one-eared, one-armed and one-legged Sergeant McGurk - is a shameless rascal obsessed with money and sex.
Adding to Samuel’s troubles are his family - his wife, Elizabeth, has become a lesbian, his son, Joshua, is a dimwitted giant, his eldest daughter, Cora, is in love with the pro-British Ezekiel Spriggs and her sister, Mary, is an ardent revolutionary....
In these four series, Mary tries to starts a mutiny at her sister’s wedding; Cora falls pregnant - but the marriage isn’t consummated; McGurk turns spy; and Ezekiel discovers the truth about his ginger baby (and sets out to find the ginger father). With war fast approaching, Samuel turns his shop into a bar called Sam’s Place and helps an old flame called Ingrid, Cora discovers a gift for penning pornography and Mary discovers there’s no place like home. And as the revolution hits Baltimore, Ezekiel is kidnapped by rebel militia, Captain Brimshaw attempts to broker peace with George Washington and Samuel and company flee to London. Can they persuade King George III to end the war?

Entertaining, if a little bland
A strong first series gives a great outline of the story threads and the comedy itself is charming, but the later series' seem to wave around, seemingly uncertain of what direction to go in (Series 2 was dull, series 3 tried more surrealist comedy and series 4 seemed desperate to finish).
Jay Tarsis as the lead Samuel was good but not great, Andy Hamilton was typically the funnier one, and some standout moments with Hugh Dennis gave the show some needed variety.
Overall this is worth a listen but don't expect a new strong favourite

One of the BBC’s weaker offerings
I’m a big fan of BBC audio programming, but I was unfamiliar with this show. I read the reviews and thought I’d give it a shot. It’s just okay, not really very funny. I’m not really sure why other people like it so much. It’s pretty corny.
