Wie er, des Kampfes müde, sich in sich selbst zurückzieht, und wie die Welt schließlich, da sie dem Künstler nichts mehr anhaben kann, sich am Bürger rächt.
Rembrandt, als Sohn des freien Hollands, war der erste freie Künstler. Statt wie die früheren einem kirchlichen oder weltlichen Hofstaat sich einzuordnen, war er auf seine königliche Unab-hängigkeit stolz. Statt wie die früheren sich an Aufträge zu binden, zeichnete und malte er das, was sein Genius ihm eingab. Er hat so das Reich der Kunst um ganz neue Provinzen erweitert. Er ist Wege gewandelt, die noch kein Früherer ging; hat Schätze gehoben, die des Entdeckers harrten. Darum feiern wir ihn heute. Den Namen Rembrandt aussprechen, heißt eine Fahne aufhissen: das Banner unabhängigen, stolzen Künstlertums.
