Summary

Warrior queens and Roman invaders do battle in the final volume of this thrilling epic fantasy trilogy.

Caesar's soldiers have murdered, massacred and pillaged their way through Gaul and loom on the far side of the sea, ready to descend upon Britain; with them are an unstoppable legion of men twisted by dark magic.

Somehow Queen Lowa must repel the invasion, although her best general is dead and her young druid powerless. She faces impossible odds, but when the alternative is death or slavery, a warrior queen will do whatever it takes to save her people.

Every empire has its downfall.

Superb characters

One of the best series I have ever listened to. fantastic narration and marvellously nuanced characters. Moves well beyond simple goodies and baddies. Even minor characters are drawn in detail and you understand that evil actions can be driven by love and people can change.

Very good, possibly even great

Would you listen to Reign of Iron again? Why?

Excellent end to a great trilogy. It's refreshing to read a well crafted book that actually finishes after three books!

Great stuff. Enjoyed every minute

Storytelling, performance and immersion in early British culture was utterly excellent. Just don't expect a dull historical essay. I hope more appears very soon

Compelling

It seems strange that Caesar is falling from grace I so many tales. He is no longer the brave warrior but mor a self publicist. I will be waiting eagerly for the next instalment. So much can be learned from fiction about the past

Thoroughly Enjoyable

Someone else reviewed this as "getting better as you go", but I actually preferred book 1. I'm not sure Angus Watson does the large scale battle thing as well as (for example) David Gemmell. I never felt that books 2 & 3 quite delivered on the promise of 1, but it didn't stop me finishing the trilogy and enjoying it.

However his characters are all fab, and it's a great story of a time that's not well recorded. His inclusion of magic adds a little "fantasy" to the story which I really liked, but some don't.

Then of course there's a +1 for Sean Barrett who gives Ceaser his pomposity and Chamanka her mystery. I think this is what tipped it into 4/5 stars rather than 3/4. Strangely, our cat has now recognised his voice so much that he knows it's tea time whenever the dock starts playing. Only Mr Barrett can do this!!

Fills a hole were David Gemmell should be.

Loved everything about this. A badgering good listen read beautifully. A grateful reader of fantasy.... the characterisations are warm and witty. Thank you Mr Watson.

A gripping tale of Iron Age Britain

I’ve loved every minute of Gus Watson’s trilogy, and found myself listening way too late than I should have on many occasions. Being a fan of historical fiction, I was initially a little put off by the ‘fantasy’ label, but this made for an interesting diversion, and filled in the gaps very well indeed, with some really well illustrated characters, beasts and monsters. Great stuff and highly recommended!
