Summary

A powerful, moving and hopeful book exploring what people regret most when they are dying and how this can help us lead a better life.

If you were told you were going to die tomorrow, what would you regret?

Ten years ago, without time to think or prepare, Georgina Scull ruptured internally. The doctors told her she could have died and, as Georgina recovered, she began to consider the life she had led and what she would have left behind.

Paralysed by a fear of wasting what seemed like precious time but also fully ready to learn how to spend her second chance, Georgina set out to meet others who had faced their own mortality or had the end in sight.

A difficult but deeply rewarding listen.

Despite being a collection of stories full of tragedy and heartbreak, "Regrets of the Dying" is an inspiring and life-affirming book. I was deeply moved by the honesty and desire to share the painfully acquired wisdom of all Georgina Scull spoke to while writing this book.
I dare say that everyone can benefit from reading this book because faced with stories of so much pain and sadness, one is forced to think about one's own life, values and choices - a difficult but deeply rewarding read.

Dip in and be grateful

This is definitely a book I chose to dip into, between other audible titles. It’s an intense subject and each time I listened, I felt I’d been sat with a cup of tea on the sofa, chatting with Georgina. I felt included in the incredibly personal details. For me, it was life affirming, giving me the confidence that I know what makes me happy in life, so keep on doing that. Great book, but for goodness sake, space it out over a period of time. It’s intense, obviously, but it’s great, and the lessons were beautifully delivered. In real life, you’d never have a conversation about Regrets of the Dying for hours, so dip in and out and you’ll love it, JCx

Excellent book

I learnt a lot from this book, the importance of keeping things in perspective and being grateful for what you have. Lots and lots of pearls of wisdom. I would highly recommend this book.

A captivating and inspiring book that moved me to tears

A captivating and inspiring book that moved me to tears.

I cried four times whilst reading this book, which is likely a record.

This book has impacted upon me like hardly others ever have before and I was enthralled throughout.

At points I was so moved that it made me reevaluate my whole life, at one specific point I read advice that helped me resolve guilt I have carried for two years about my own father’s death.

The best book of 2022 by far.

Powerful listening.

Makes you evaluate your own life, what you are actually doing with it on a daily basis, how important the things you think are important really are in truth. How we can hang on to our regrets & continue to live with them in our heads instead of living our life.
Some incredibly sad stories here that brought me to tears. You feel the despair, loss & frustration , fear & guilt.
Each story has it's own unique challenge, some have a positive outcome, but many don't . You feel exhausted but somehow motivated by the end of it to take note of what these people are saying.
Make the most of your life, change /clear out what isn't working, including people. We all die at some point, it's inescapable & (most) of us don't know when or how, but let's have as few regrets as possible when that time comes. ( and it will come)
A rare book I will periodically return to when I'm feeling sorry for myself, as a reminder to get on with living the best I can without collecting more regrets.

Hits you right in the feels

You only get one life, so learning from others' regrets is a great way to avoid wasting it. Less a book, and more an anthology of short stories, this work is best enjoyed in pieces. Not all the stories are relatable, because not all people are like you. But the ones that catch you, they grip you hard. I won't forget the affluent landowner, whose assets and family were gradually stripped away by his manipulative business partner. Also stunning is the story of the lonely old man, desperately seeking out his lost love from decades ago. The book has dozens of such stories - all essentially one-sided, and all coloured by reinterpretation, retelling & faded memories. While lacking in objectivity, these tales will help you make sense of your own life. Notably, while people care a lot about family, freedom, goals and ambitions - nobody ever pays much heed to material goods, TV, and the rest of what we spend our time chasing. Listen may prompt you to rethink your priorities.

The authors reads well and writes exceptionally, with beautiful prose ultimately leading to an unfolding of her own regrets - about a failed marriage, and unfulfilled ambitions of motherhood. Not to its detriment, this is a very feminine book - dominated by empathy over facts. I would love to read a more empirical complementary work.
