About this listen

The British Army at the end of the nineteenth century was not a fair place. Despite the reforms, a bad officer could still ruin men's lives and Jack Roberts discovers that despite being a hero of Rorke's Drift, that means nothing when a superior has influence. He becomes a soldier serving in the Egyptian campaign where he learns not only new skills but how to deal with the new responsibility fatherhood brings.

Throughout it all one thing is constant, he is a soldier of the queen, a redcoat with a rifle.

Good easy listening story with a few nice historical touches. Unfortunately for those familiar with military history of the era, a couple of details seem strangely wrong in Griff’s narrative. The Martini Henry was chambered in 577/450, not .303. Also there was no safety, having only a cocked indicator.
Still a good listen though.

Great Boys Own story.

a proper story with a proper hero, more like this please, Griff Hosker is a great story teller

believeable

Very believable and historically accurate as a senior NCO myself who has seen War in its stark and often brutal form l know that Jack Roberts was a fine leader who would not recklessly risk the lives of Men under his command

Action through the eyes of a decent Soldier

A worthwhile follow up to Soldier of the Queen. Loved every minute of it. Sincerely hope that book 3 Omdurman will be available on Audibke soon.
