About this listen

A life-changing 7-step program for parents who are struggling to help their kids navigate today's complex world, written by one of Australia's most influential teachers.

As school refusal, mental health struggles and social challenges in the playground continue to rise, trailblazing teacher Gavin McCormack is redefining what it means to receive a `good education’.

They say it takes a village to raise a child. Gavin’s transformative methods can be used by parents, carers and educators alike. He highlights the power of modelling positive behaviour and prioritising essential life skills over academic scores, helping children build resilience, develop emotional intelligence, and thrive beyond traditional measures of success.

Drawing on the latest neuroscience of learning and years of teaching experience in mainstream and Montessori schools, he offers practical strategies that will help children navigate life's challenges, learn with passion and grow into capable, confident and compassionate human beings. Gavin believes when children are given independence, the right tools, and the encouragement to build on their strengths, their potential is limitless.

Critic reviews

'This book was like a huge breath of fresh air. From the first page I knew I was reading some deep and profound wisdom that understood what education is truly meant to be. It explores my passion that education is about "people making" and not about grades. Gavin McCormack is a huge light, showing us where schooling and education needs to be focused and how we can inspire todays' kids to make the world a better place. Everyone needs to read this book.' This book answered the biggest question I’ve always had in my mind about education! With an already stretched education system, how is it even possible to move away from constant testing and rote learning?

Gavin clearly demonstrates his decade-long experience of teaching Montessori methods, and how slowly and gradually, within a classroom and as Head of School (in his own, and several other schools)
changed their teaching culture so that both teachers and students are thriving within an educational setting.

Reading this book, the penny really dropped. That education does not have to be about tests, scores, endless, marking and endless comparisons between students, parents, and schools.
It’s amazing to read real world situations and examples of how Montessori methods make a difference for everybody and beyond the classroom. Reading about how young children were rising to the challenges of real world problem-solving and doing this together with compassion, humour, humility and persistence, I really felt that as adults, we could all learn from their bravery and care.

When home life, school life and societal pressures can make parenting and teaching at times feel attritional, this book is the antidote to this anxiety trilemma: of how and why together, we are all part of raising resilient children.

Thank you Gavin.
