Quo Vadis, best known for its star-studded 1951 film version, was first published in 1896 and contributed to the author’s Nobel Prize for Literature of 1905.

Set in the latter years of the reign of Roman Emperor Nero, the plot concerns the love between a young Christian woman, Lygia, and a Roman patrician, Marcus Vinicius. Sienkiewicz was said to have been inspired to write the novel when visiting the Chiesa del Domine Quo Vadis, and the novel is strongly imbued with a pro-Christian sentiment, along with many detailed descriptions of the opulence and debauchery of Nero’s Rome. It is informative, exciting and ultimately uplifting!

The author, Henryk Sienkiewiez, masterfully creates atmosphere and character in this great classic tale of early Christians in Rome. The listener will feel drawn into the drama and will feel for the suffering and the dilemmas faced by each actor in the drama. The 1950s film made after this book does not do credit, though in my humble opinion that movie was great entertainment.
I cannot give enough praise to this complete classic book. The narrator, Peter Wickham, reads at a good pace and has a pleasant light English accent which I find easy on the ear. Although this is a work of fiction, the story is based on true history and one does not need to be Christian to enjoy this great classic and to feel for the suffering, which, although fiction, portrays very real events of cruelty and suffering.
The book was very satisfying to listen to and the listener will find it had to put down. The beauty of an audio book is that you don’t always have to put it down when doing tasks, so carry on with gardening or housework whilst you listen.

I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys really great literature and ripping good yarns. You can’t go wrong with this one.

If the whole book had been about Petronius cutting through the shit of both Nero and the Christians with his wit and elegance, this would have been a better book.
