About this listen
From the critically acclaimed author of THE BROKEN EMPIRE series comes a brilliant new epic fantasy series, THE RED QUEEN’S WAR.
The Red Queen is old but the kings of the Broken Empire fear her as they fear no other.
Her grandson Jalan Kendeth is a coward, a cheat and a womaniser; and tenth in line to the throne. While his grandmother shapes the destiny of millions, Prince Jalan pursues his debauched pleasures. Until he gets entangled with Snorri ver Snagason, a huge Norse axe man, and dragged against his will to the icy north.
In a journey across half the Broken Empire, Jalan flees minions of the Dead King, agrees to duel an upstart prince named Jorg Ancrath, and meets the ice witch, Skilfar, all the time seeking a way to part company with Snorri before the Norseman’s quest leads them to face his enemies in the black fort on the edge of the Bitter Ice.
PRINCE OF FOOLS is the first book in the series.
Critic reviews
‘A savage voice which is telling you a good jest while trying to drown you in story’
ROBERT LOW (Author of the Kingdom Series and the Oathsworn Series)
‘Really excellent, gritty fantasy – I'm trying to avoid comparison with GAME OF THRONES, but I'm afraid it’s right there. But funnier. Very funny indeed’
YA and Carnegie-shortlisted author ANTHONY MCGOWAN
Praise for The Broken Empire:
‘Dark and relentless, Prince of Thorns will pull you under and drown you in story. A two-in-the-morning page turner. Absolutely stunning… jaw-dropping’ ROBIN HOBB
‘Excellent – on a par with George R.R. Martin’ CONN IGGULDEN
‘Lawrence’s poetic prose is amazing, far and away the best of the modern fantasy authors’ PETER V. BRETT
‘A hard-edged tale of survival and conquest in a brutal medieval world, well told and very compelling’ TERRY BROOKS
I would love to hear more about Taproot, some story of his travels and collection of gossip + circus animals and performers.

The voices are well acted out as well, you can easily distinguish which character is speaking from the accents and voices.
If you've been listening to a lot of serious fantasy stories with gritty struggles and tragic, heart-wrenching deaths... This is a good and enjoyable listen to break up the black, grey, and blood red.
As in, it'll at least have a giggle between the grey and blood red.
Give it a listen!

Where does Prince of Fools rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
"Prince of Fools" is one of the best performed audiobooks I have had the pleasure to listen to so far. The overall performance is engrossing; Sean Ohlendorf did a brilliant job narrating the story - seems like he crafted the characters with great insight and knew the text intimately. What other book might you compare Prince of Fools to, and why?
It is quite difficult to compare a book to any other; however, we have an epic journey that spans over several books - the leg described in this one is just the beginning (the comparison to the "Lord of the Rings" series is inevitable), despite the story starting in the mild climate it ends in the cold, freezing North (here we can draw attention to the "Norse Sagas") and also have a great chemistry between the main characters (here you can place any of your favourite "buddy" books where banter of any kind is quite inevitable).Which character – as performed by Sean Ohlendorf – was your favourite?
Characters in this book are instantly likeable. Prince Jalan is portrayed as lovable rogue (and a rogue he is) whom you would probably "kill" if he was part of your life. Snorri is the friend you hope your rouge son might come across and who can beat a little sense into him. The array of other characters is so great and performed with such a skill that it is impossible to choose the favourite one. They are all part of the story and add to the richness of the tapestry created by Mark Lawrence.Any additional comments?
Did I mention that this book is funny? The banter between the main characters is hilarious; Mark Lawrence must had had fun writing the repartees between his main characters. This book will entertain and Sean Ohlendorf's performance adds greatly to the story.Prince of Fools
