About this listen

The nanotechnology was designed to fight cancer. Instead, it evolved into the machine plague, killing nearly five billion people and changing life on Earth forever.

The nanotech has one weakness: it self-destructs at altitudes above ten thousand feet. Those few who've managed to escape the plague struggle to stay alive on the highest mountains, but time is running out. There is famine and war, and the environment is crashing worldwide. Humanity's last hope lies with a top nanotech researcher aboard the International Space Station -- and with a small group of survivors in California who risk a daring journey below the death line...

I heard about this author from the Starshipsofa podcast (a very old episode from the back catalogue) and decided to get one of his audiobooks. I wasnt disappointed and the story is very good with equal parts tense moments and action that is gripping. it does have some faults though; like not investing enough time to making me care about the characters so I feel genuinely sad when they die, or leave the plot some other way. there was a character called Erin whom I have no affection for and view as a disposable plot device more than anything for example. I think I was meant to care about her more than that though.

aside from that, the plot is one that isn't too far fetched and that's how I like my sci-fi; I only have to imagine a couple of parameters of the real world are different, and reach a little into a supposed future to get my head into the universe that this story of nano-terror takes place in.

the narrator only jarred me out of the story in a couple of places, usually by misjudging the tone of speech compared to how I expected it.

I'd recommend this audio story

Good story well told, and well thought out

Not worth a download a losten or even a second though. Move on by and don't look back. I've never had a worse book to date... boring, monotone, dull and i gave it quite a few chapters before i could do no more. Each to their own but I can't in good conscious recommend this book. 😩

terrible story, terrible narration, terrible !!!!
