In the first-ever history of the world's female buccaneers, Pirate Women: the Princesses, Prostitutes, and Privateers Who Ruled the Seven Seas tells the story of women, both real and legendary, who through the ages sailed alongside - and sometimes in command of - their male counterparts. These women came from all walks of life but had one thing in common: a desire for freedom. History has largely ignored these female swashbucklers - until now. Here are their stories, from ancient Norse princess Alfhild and warrior Rusla to Sayyida al-Hurra of the Barbary corsairs; from Grace O'Malley, who terrorized shipping operations around the British Isles during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, to Cheng I Sao, who commanded a fleet of 400 ships off China in the early 19th century. Author Laura Sook Duncombe also looks beyond the stories to the storytellers and mythmakers. What biases and agendas motivated them? What did they leave out? Pirate Women explores why and how these stories are told and passed down and how history changes depending on who is recording it. It's the most comprehensive overview of women pirates in one volume and chock-full of swashbuckling adventures that pull these unique women from the shadows into the spotlight that they deserve.

This was much more detailed than I thought it would be, a fantastic collection of pirate women one by one telling each of their stories.

Laura Sook Duncombe's writing is brilliant and her research is most impressive.

There are some pieces on their male counterparts which is essential for the female Pirates' stories to be fully told.

I didn't know anything about female pirates except for Grace O'Malley so I learned a huge amount from this book, most interesting for me were Anne Bonny and Maria Lindsey.

Wow what notorious women these were so from here as these were my two favorite I've looked up some books on Anne and Maria to get to know about these women even more because I was astounded to learn about their shocking behavior and ruthless personalities!

I usually buy my books on paperback but I thought I would try this on Audible first as it was looking quite heavy going in the Google Books preview, but when I like a book on Audible I usually go and buy the paperback as well so at the moment I can't review the quality of the paperback or whether there are any illustrations, but the audible performance is great.

I am fascinated by this book and as I said the research is amazing with so much detail, I've learned so much about female piracy. my passion is women in medieval history so I was picking little bits up in medieval podcasts which is what made me want to learn more about female piracy, this book has it all, highly recommended!

Excellent book, so well researched! Unfortunatreally, I really disliked the narrator. otherwise, it is very enjoyable.

Great book!

I enjoyed the historical information & the fascinating u formation on a somewhat unknown subject area.

However this was somewhat ruined for me by a bias and gender issue that I felt ruined a very positive message and read.

The unique aspects and focus is a excellent listen and worth while but this can be challenging at times due to certain view points and strong position that seems to detract from the focus of this for me.
I do not challenge these view points just the value they add to this book.

interesting & fascinating. however challenging

Some very interesting chapters about poignant female pirates and their significance with some well-known pirates and crews. The narrator was extremely difficult to listen to though, and I’ll avoid books with this narrator in future.

Interesting Content; Awful Narration
