Summary

On his first day of college, all Jeremy Miller can think about is getting away from his hellish home life, making the wrestling team, and finally getting a real boyfriend. He's sick to death of being used by closeted football players who are too afraid to admit they like guys. What he doesn't count on is losing his mind over the gorgeous, golden-eyed wrestling captain who needs to keep their attraction a secret at all costs.

After earning a full-ride wrestling scholarship and getting accepted into an elite sports medicine program, Beck thinks he's got it made. Now he's a favorite for the national championship in his weight class. Life has never been sweeter or more predictable. Never mind that he's gay and wishing he didn't have to hide it. There will be plenty of time for a social life after graduation. Until then he doesn't need anything to get in the way of his big plans, and that includes the adorable little wrestler who's got him all tied up in knots.

Great start to this series!

I started this audiobook as soon as I finished the Kage Trilogy because I loved it so much I just had to check out more work by this author. I enjoyed this book but it wasn't great but I may have had my hopes set really high after Kage. I loved the writing and I liked the characters but something about Jeremy was a little inconsistent for me. I can't put my finger on it but whatever it was made me change my mind constantly about him. This was a sweet love story with very steamy scenes. I loved how this ended!! Nothing better than seeing a happy ending! This was a good start to the series and I will be be getting the next book!

The narration was good. He did a good job at the two different voices and making it obvious who was speaking.

Angsty college wrestlers with great narration

This is a complex YA/NA story about two wrestlers finding love in a sport that is fairly homophobic, but in this case their coach is dangerously homophobic.

There is a lot of sex in this – so I think for groupings New Adult is more appropriate, but the angst and drama and sometimes over-the-topness sometimes felt more Young Adult.

Beck’s is gay but closeted, doesn’t want to lose his wrestling scholarship. Jeremy is the new guy, super attracted and attractive to Becks, but having to fight against the fear of outing.

The first part of the book is their push-pull of attraction, the second part is dealing with the aftermath.

The second part is where (for me) it got a bit too dramatic at times, though I appreciated the overall statements that get made and the end result. (I won’t say but it involves the Coach in a very bad way and Jeremy makes some decisions that are really hard to witness.)

At the end we get a very satisfying HEA and our MCs manage to bring the bad guy to justice! (I loved the whole Batman/Robin switcheroo underwear thing – very clever!)

Audio

Well I just love Chris Patton so I loved the hell out of this narration. He’s so easy to listen to and I think this hits his “age level” spot on. Kind of young, but mature enough for some hot man on man action. ☺

Nice College Coming Out Story

I thought the plot was very believable. There was a college freshman (Jeremy) who planned to become himself at college and let everyone know he was gay. His love interest was a heavily closeted senior wrestler (Beck). Their dance of coming together and moving apart seemed to capture the real life struggles of young people caught between what they believe are society's (or family's or friend's) expectations and their true self. There were many great moments in the story but I think my favorite was when the oversized wrestler (Caleb) who had been menacing Jeremy from the start and played the ever-macho fool admitted to his friend Beck that he liked Jeremy and was teasing him because of that and that he would never expose Beck's secret life. This was an incidental small piece of the story but underscores the talent of the author in attending to the details. I've just started the 2nd book in the series and hope that by the time I'm done there will be book 3 ready to download.

Nice college age/coming out tale

This was my first book by this author and I really enjoyed it. The SSU universe is a comprised of a group of friends (The Tribe) who find, help, support and love each other. This is the first couple, Beck and Jeremy. Beck is a closeted captain of the wrestling team whose world is rocked when he meets Jeremy, a freshman who is also on his wrestling team. Jeremy comes from a dysfunctional, abusive family and hopes going to SSU will enable to finally escape the shame and poverty of his family life. They both have challenges to overcome and it is not always pretty and stretches the "credibility" bounds a little. Despite that, I enjoyed their journey to couplehood, which is full of angst. But I also enjoyed that the story included post-angst drama. Chris Patton does a wonderful job in bringing these men to life.

Warning

I was the victim of a predator. This book brought back the anxiety and feelings that haven't bothered me for years. It does have a warning label and others haven't affected me before, but this one is well written and gets you where it hurts. The story was sweet, hot, and gut wrenching, but beautiful all at the same time. If you are comfortable with this type of content it's totally worth the credit.

What a great way to start out a phenomenal series!

I haven't the words to say what a phenomenal team Maris Black and Chris Patton are! First off, the way that Chris Patton narrates is unprecedented. This man has talent that can't be rivaled! I especially love the way that he brought to life the different characters. Beck is by far my favorite! And the way that Maris Black writes takes my breath away!! I loved this series and want to sincerely thank Maris and Chris for bringing the men of SSU into my life!

great!

This is the second series I've read by Maris Black, (Kage being the first one) and I have to say that I think this author is my all-time favorite M/M romance author! The stories have an in depth and interesting plot. It's not all about the sex, it's a real plot that has sex in it. I like that! Also, I love her characters. They seem very relatable. And even though there is usually some kind of conflict that happens, the story doesn't contain constant drama between the two love interests. I thought this particular story was very moving and beautiful. It's a must read!

A Good Read

Really enjoyed this story, though I was a bit unsure about Beck initially. But he grew on me and I thought that he and Jeremy were perfect for one another. A roller coaster ride of self-discovery, self-acceptance, discovery of love, and putting a scum bag in his place...this story has it all.
