About this listen

Lola and Pijin make up stories to test each other, stories of daring and adventure, of bad people and of Gwyn, who drives his ice cream up the hill to their town every week. Stori uffernol o da! This story feels like a bath for the soul! The landscape portrayed is rough and rugged and the words weave a tapestry of something precious! I’m not sure I will ever be able to get this story out of my heart, it’s where my home is!

There are sentences throughout this book that so beautifully weave words and imagery, it is a spellbinding novel.
The power of language is expressed powerfully and whilst there are sentences spoken in Welsh it is not necessary to be a Welsh speaker to be drawn along - the context always allows a translation to be understood.
The raw, uncompromisingly nastiness of the circumstances that Pigeon, Iola and Cher encounter is so brilliantly told, and every character you meet - from “odd” Gwyn to the “aunties” in the chapel - are completely compelling (I think I knew them all!)
The only thing I didn’t like about this book was that it had to end.
I would love to know the next chapter…
