About this listen

Closer...
They found the town silent, apparently abandoned. Then they found the first body strangely swollen and still warm. One hundred fifty were dead, 350 missing. But the terror had only begun in the tiny mountain town of Snowfield, California.

...and closer...
At first, they thought it was the work of a maniac. Or terrorists. Or toxic contamination. Or a bizarre new disease.

...and closer...
But then they found the truth. And they saw it in the flesh. And it was worse than anything any of them had ever imagined.

While this story was extremely engaging for its genre and content, as well as performance, it started off with the mystery of a psychological thriller and ended up becoming like a 1970's hammer horror. It couldn't hold itself in the end and the description of the "thing" reminded me of a Sam Raimi style boring gorefest. A bit of a disappointment after 14 hours of listening.

Flimsy story, almost comedic but well read

performance was perfect for the genre.. similar to a reading of the twilight zone. the story focuses on a town in us that suffers from mysterious and inexplicable deaths from a variety of causes.. some natural some horrific.. a remake of The Blob but with no cheese at all. excellent dean koontz horror

brilliant horror.. much like The Blob

Any additional comments?

This is not my usual genre but I thought I'd take a punt as the blurb was enticing. I was very pleasantly surprised. I really enjoyed it and found myself invested in the characters of Jenny, Lisa, Brice and Tal. Dr Flight's character was subtle and amusing and added a very welcome touch of humour. I can't say I loved it but I certainly enjoyed it and will definitely read a book by Dean Koontz again. The story was fantastic, well paced and thoroughly researched and that always impresses me. The 4 stars is no reflection of any down sides to the book, it's merely that I'm obviously not really a horror story kind of reader! Well worth the effort

Well worth a read

This is the first I've read of Dean Koontz, after being told he was like Stephen King I thought I'd give him a go. Pleasantly surprised and enjoyed this story. If told it had been by King I could have believed it.
I enjoy fiction most when there are some true facts in the story line. This book proved a couple of these facts that I found very interesting. Yes, I will be adding more by Mr Koontz to my library.

Not a bad yarn.
