Summary

Everyone has issues and experiences that deeply affect their lives. Some are good, some bad, but all of them combine to make each person who they are on any given day. But while it is common to have life experiences, it is rare to find a writer who can define and describe life’s journey in a way that connects with virtually anyone who reads the work. Author Lynn Bryant has achieved this delicate task in her debut collection of poetry, Peeling Myself a Soul.

Running the gamut of emotions from deep pain to uplifting joy, Peeling Myself a Soul is a collection of 50 poems infused with an overwhelming sense of love and personal growth. Held together by a clear-cut emotional procession, this collection follows the writer’s journey through life, offering her musings on family, relationships and love. Weighty issues such as race relations and domestic abuse are also explored and are marked with the same emotional resonance that is the defining characteristic of Bryant’s poetry. Each piece is a wholly unique work indicative of the author’s style - poetry that possesses a captivating feel, while remaining inherently accessible to all.

Overflowing with both reality and introspection, Peeling Myself a Soul boldly investigates what it means to be an African American female today while encompassing the best that contemporary poetry has to offer.

Critic reviews

"Peeling Myself a Soul by Lynn Lee Bryant is soulful poetry, introspective in nature, and filled with strong spiritual currents. The very opening poem captivates the reader, immersing them in the dance of the spirit and of life. Addressing the soul in the past, she journeys into the future, hoping the future will bear more fruit. She makes references to the secret (sacred) life within her and sees a connection with the soldiers of the past.... Peeling Myself a Soul is narrated in a voice that grabs the reader from the very first moment and pulls them into the 'soul' of the writing. I enjoyed the exploration of the spiritual themes, which are reflected in the mellow tone the author uses when reading poems with such themes. While I enjoy reading poems, listening to Lynn Lee Bryant’s poetry was an inspiring, soul-searching experience for me." (Romuald Dzemo, Reader's Favorite

Vivid and Rich Imagery

Peeling Myself a Soul is a collection of poetry written in a vivid and expressive style. The imagery is rich and lingers. The book is divided into sections and includes Love, Mother and Child, Societal, Spiritual, and more.

The expressive style in which it is written reverberates with the listener. The imagery is rich and vibrant. Such examples include “mirrored reflections in a pond” and “droplets of water fall and lose their identity” are just two excellent examples of the arresting imagery. Listeners need a space where they can focus on the words and images, they can almost see the expressions being described.

The author also provided the narration of this collection. While her narration skills are still a bit rough and at times pitchy, her performance resonated with passion. Not only were the words ladened with emotion but they were further enhanced by her passion.

The author/narrator gives the listener thought-provoking words and encourages the listener to take an account of their emotional feelings as well. This is a collection of poetry that will linger long after you press stop.
