I admit that I do not quite understand the allure of the ringing telephone, I am more than likely to ignore it's call than to answer it, it does seem that many are almost programmed to pick up the receiver (or today, to unlock the screen and answer the call).

This is a tale of a psychopath (Jake) who uses the pay phone to lure his victims, his tale includes a hint of what made him the way he is although I'm not so sure myself, I believe some of 'memories' may be fake. He's not particularly good at luring them however and the first would-be victim we're introduced to is one that does not take Jake's fancy at all, he is desperate to get rid of her in fact. Then he's back to his telephone and he thinks he's struck lucky when Chelsea anwers, however, she turns him down and this kick starts a stalking of a kind, which perhaps he would have been better to have avoided.

I particularly enjoyed the ending, it amused me and made me hope that perhaps, one day, Jake might be back in one way or another.

Charles Mallet narrates this perfectly, I would not, however, describe this as a horror novel, it's far more thriller than horror but that's up to you to decide once you've listened.

You will find yourself on the edge of your seat suspense, and by the ending. Full of murder and mayhem. If you like gore and suspense, then Pay Phone is for you.
