Summary

Fans of Agatha Raisin, Miss Marple, and Midsomer Murders are loving the latest English village sleuth.

When a climber suspiciously falls to his death and a local artist has her dog stolen, both cases fall into the lap of local sleuth, Patricia Fisher...and so starts an adventure that will see her travel the world.

Far from being your average woman, Patricia Fisher lives in a 73-room manor house and travels with a Jamaican butler who is part ninja and fakes his Downton Abbey accent. How these things came about is a story in itself, yet far from embracing the quiet English village life - playing croquet on the lawn and eating cucumber sandwiches - Patricia pokes her nose where it is most definitely not wanted and finds herself being shot at rather more often than one ought reasonably to expect.

But as she closes in on the bad guys in each case, it’s clear there is someone operating in the background, someone who has taken offence for crimes previously solved and they plan on getting revenge at any cost. Join her and an enticing cast of friends as they tackle mystery after mystery and get into hot water with criminals, gangsters, and the police.  What Sam Knew is the first in a follow-on series from Patricia’s successful Cruise Mystery series Books in that series:

  • The Missing Sapphire of Zangrabar
  • The Kidnapped Bride
  • The Director’s Cut
  • The Couple in Cabin 2124
  • Dr Death
  • Murder on the Dancefloor
  • Mission for the Maharaja

Great story spoiled by the reader

Reader spoiled this with staccato style and frequent mispronunciations. Seemed to be an American trying to sound British without ever having heard the accent before.

Awful Accents!

Only thru the first book and the story is ok but the narrator is awful! What is with attempt at an posh English accent???? Very irritating and might have to return the book - a waste of a credit

Great Story. Shame about the narrator

I love these books and have been looking forward to listening to the audio version. What a massive disappointment when I heard the narrator. She is American doing a cod version of British accents. Her version of Jermaine’s accent is a west African one - not the cultured English one in the books. Not even a reasonable Jamaican accent.

She doesn’t know how to pronounce so many English words DownTOWN Abbey not DownTON. FET instead of Fête, and so many others. Such a shame!

I won’t be buying any more books narrated by this person.

Very disappointed!

I am at a loss to understand why they chose someone to narrate this in such an odd accent! I wish I’d listened to the preview! It’s terrible to listen to! I can’t tell if the story is good because I can’t bear to listen to the narration! Such a shame!

Endurance needed

The stories are great as usual but the narration was dire and hard to endure.

Awful

This has to be the most boringly narrated book series I have ever heard. The narration leaves so much to be desired. Her voices are terribly done compared to other narrators, she labours over the reading in a positively amateurish way, the whole thing is a chore to read.

I really do not recommend this, a pity as the story seems good but is ruined by the reader.

no I won't continue to listen

I don't like the haughty voice. won't keep listening. I fell for an ad where alleged readers were laughing.

Narrator Kills the Book

This review focuses on the narration of the stories.
I could not finish listening to these adventures. Why? Maryanne Wells’ choice of voice. It’s painful.
The stories, the few I did manage to get to, are light and entertaining; however, Wells’ attempt to sound like a Dumont aristocrat from a 30’s Marx Brothers film is, at best, cringe worthy.

Fishers mysteries

I couldn’t get past book one fourth chapter, not because the story, but the narrator. I’m so very sorry, but I bought the whole book series, and I I just couldn’t listen to her voice any longer.
I am so disappointed, as I am sure the story line is good….I just couldn’t get to the point I could tell.

Gripping, interesting, and even funny

The stories in this Book are gripping, very interesting, even funny enough to make me laugh. I enjoyed the stories and the characters but it was difficult getting through the narration in this audio book. The narration had so much slow one word, stop, then the next word stop, it drove me nuts. Best try a sample before you buy.

Falsetto Voice

The narration of this book was so awful it was almost impossible to listen to the stories. I gave the stories a 2 star rating simply to give the author benefit of the doubt.

I'm sorry but .......

The books were pleasant enough however, and I'm really sorry to be so harsh, but the narrator was not suited for the job. Please consider auditioning others for upcoming books....

Narrator spoils this series

Narrortors for the Cruise Mysteries did a fine job. The narrator for this Village series is very hard to listen to. Sorry I wasted a credit on it.

Won’t buy again.

First time listening to Patricia Fisher Mysteries. Will be the last. Stories are way over the top for my taste. Reminded me of Scooby-Doo cartoons of my youth. Narration was awful. I almost stopped listening a few minutes into the first book because the voice of Patricia is too high pitch and accented. The butler’s voice was also awful. I stuck through all the books until the last one. The accents were so unbearable I had to fast forward to the end.

Worst narrator ever!

I try really hard to finish a book if I start it. However I could not finish the first book in this set. The performance was the worst I have ever heard. I can't believe that the author chose this narrator to do all of his books.

Couldn't Finish the First Book

As much as I love cozy mysteries, the performance matters a lot for me to get into it. Unfortunately, I couldn't get into the first book at all. The accent is terrible. At some point I may try again, maybe on vacation sometime, then I will update the review.
