Summary

Fin des années 1990. Leonora Galloway entreprend un voyage en France avec sa fille. Toutes deux ont décidé d'aller à Thiepval, près d'Amiens, au Mémorial franco-britannique des soldats décédés durant la bataille de la Somme. Le père de Leonora est tombé au combat durant la Première Guerre mondiale, mais la date de sa mort gravée sur les murs du mémorial, le 30 avril 1916, pose problème. Leonora est en effet née près d'un an plus tard. Ce qu'on pourrait prendre pour un banal adultère de temps de guerre cache en fait une étrange histoire, faite de secrets de famille sur lesquels plane l'ombre d'un meurtre jamais résolu et où chaque mystère en dissimule un autre. Le lecteur est alors transporté en 1914 dans une grande demeure anglaise où va se jouer un drame dont les répercussions marqueront trois générations.

Dans ce livre envoûtant à l'épaisseur romanesque exceptionnelle, Robert Goddard allie le cadre et l'atmosphère des plus grands romans anglais, ceux d'Elizabeth George ou de Ruth Rendell, à un sens du suspense et de la réalité historique remarquables.
