Le Carré's post-Cold War masterpiece, filled with suspense, betrayal, desire and drama

The Cold War is over and retired secret servant Tim Cranmer has been put out to pasture, spending his days making wine on his Somerset estate. But then he discovers that his former double agent Larry - dreamer, dissolute, philanderer and disloyal friend - has vanished, along with Tim's mistress. As their trail takes him to the lawless wilds of Russia and the North Caucasus, he is forced to question everything he stood for.

Set in a fragmented, uncertain post-Soviet world, le Carré's brutal story of falsehoods and betrayal shows men playing dangerous games beyond their control.

An excellent Le Carre story involving a wonderfully intriguing main POV character. Captured so beautifully by Michael Jayston’s narration. Truly a gifted performance. It is like listening to a master craftsman at work. You can almost imagine him preforming it on stage. We should ensure his recordings of Le Carre are not lost in favour of bland re recordings.

Michael Jayston’s narration simply astoundingly good!!

I found this a difficult book to maintain interest in. I love John Le Carre books as a rule but this book failed to pull me in and a really poor ending.

Disappointing and quite boring.

Unmitigated drivel, even for late period Le Carre.

Characters with schoolchild like personas, absolutely no plot to speak of.

After one quarter of the way through everything is basically tied up, after that it’s a chore to get through.

Gave up eighty percent of the way through, pure torture.

Amazed Le Carre’s publisher allowed this mediocrity to be printed.

Mediocre Mess.
