About this listen
Othello, the Moor of Venice is a tragedy by William Shakespeare, believed to have been written in approximately 1603, and based on the Italian short story "Un Capitano Moro" ("A Moorish Captain") by Cinthio, a disciple of Boccaccio, first published in 1565.
Othello revolves around four central characters: Othello, a Moorish general in the Venetian army; his wife Desdemona; his lieutenant, Cassio; and his trusted ensign Lago. Because of its varied and current themes of racism, love, jealousy, and betrayal Othello is still often performed in professional and community theatres alike and has been the basis for numerous operatic, film, and literary adaptations.
©2023 William ShakespeareThe fact that the chapters are not cut in line with the Acts is a bit unhelpful. Another thing is that when a voice is raised you hear the echo on the tape a few minutes later. Actually I only want to mark down one point for this because it's very good that old legacy tape recordings are being digitalised and made available on Audible so fans can keep their collections together in one place - wouldn't want to discourage people doing that. However, investing a little time, care and skill would enable the recording to be cleaned up of the echo and also cut so that there are five chapters showing five acts, rather than sides A and B of four cassettes, as it must have been.
On balance, thanks for doing this but please give more care in future digitalisations.
