'Thick fog, shifting alliances and clever magic make the perfect backdrop for a sweeping romance - One Dark Window is enthralling from beginning to shocking end' Hannah Whitten, bestselling author of For the Wolf

ELSPETH NEEDS A MONSTER. THE MONSTER MIGHT BE HER.

An ancient, mercurial spirit is trapped inside Elspeth Spindle's head - she calls him the Nightmare. He protects her. He keeps her secrets. But nothing comes for free, especially magic.

When Elspeth meets a mysterious highwayman on the forest road, she is thrust into a world of shadow and deception. Together, they embark on a dangerous quest to cure the town of Blunder from the dark magic infecting it. As the stakes heighten and their undeniable attraction intensifies, Elspeth is forced to face her darkest secret yet: the Nightmare is slowly, darkly, taking over her mind. And she might not be able to stop him.

For fans of Uprooted and For the Wolf comes a gothic fantasy romance about a maiden who must unleash the monster within to save her kingdom.

There were several mispronunciations, most notable was hearth rhyming incorrectly with birth. This cropped up numerous times. Every time the text stated he/ she cleared her throat, or stated the character laughed, the narrator inserted the corresponding sound effect. This redundancy spoiled an otherwise good narration.

Irritating narration

This is one of the worst narrators I had to listen to. Only for the FMC the narrator would change her voice so often it’s genuinely the worst listening experience. The same character - so many different voices. Horrible. When going from inner voice to dialogue - sometimes it’s so different, from normal tone to high pitch desperate voice. Who does that? Who has a normal tone in their head, and then almost squeaks the same thought outside. Something tells me the narrator it’s not used to first person narration. Maybe they are used to third person narration.

The only reason I would recommend this book is the unique magic system. But most of the story outside of magic - I rolled my eyes a lot. Too many cliches. 90% of men are tall, broad shoulders and handsome. And the whole rhyming thing, it because so annoying.

The magic system is unique but…

I really enjoyed this book and the concept behind it. I actually can't find fault with anything.

This book kept me on the edge of my seat. The characters felt very real and developed and I loved the concept of the magic and the world. I thoroughly enjoyed the narration as well.

Great characters and magic system.
