Summary

What defended the US after the attack on Pearl Harbor, defeated the Soviet Union in the Cold War, and is an essential tool in the fight against terror? Aircraft carriers.

For 70 years, these ships remained a little-understood cornerstone of American power. In his latest book, On Wave and Wing, Barrett Tillman sheds light on the history of these floating leviathans and offers a nuanced analysis of the largest man-made vessel in the history of the world.

Very interesting book, It could be better

First of all, I feel I need to apologize for all the foreign names butchered by the reader, who seems unable to pronounce any non-English name correctly.
Moving to the audiobook, I appreciated its content, but I felt it dedicated too much time to describing carrier combat and not enough time to the design and technical revolutions. For example, there is almost no mention of the armoured flight deck developed by the British just before the start of WWII, a type of armour that allowed the British Pacific Fleet Carriers to suffer extremely limited damage from Kamikaze attacks

Potted History.

Not so much a history of the aircraft carrier as more a history of the aircraft on board. I don't know what I was expecting but possibly a bit more on construction and designing the carrier. This book, although well researched, touched solely on numbers and use. Good narrative though and still an interesting book.

Misophonia beware.

Great book. However, if you have misophonia triggered by someone that moves their tongue amd mouth incorrectly, clicks their t, p, c, and lisps, then this may be a hard listen. I really struggled and my anxiety and frustration was off the scale. It makes the book hard to enjoy.

Informative and unbiased.

A refreshing and unbiased book, predominantly from the American perspective but with plenty of positive focus on the Royal Navy's contribution, not only during wartime, but to the development of the aircraft carrier itself.
