Summary

Dickie Arbiter was spokesman for the queen during the most turbulent period of her reign. On Duty with the Queen is an open and engaging account of his life and his fascinating role in serving this unique family at a time of momentous change.

Dickie gives his personal insights into events that shaped his relationship with the royal family over the years, from joining the queen on a picnic at Balmoral in 1988 to being alongside her at the time of the death of Diana Princess of Wales in 1997.

In this honest and entertaining audiobook, Dickie Arbiter recounts his life's journey from a broadcast journalist to becoming a press spokesman to the royal family and back again to journalism. He discusses the inner workings of everyday life in Buckingham Palace and what it was really like to work under the media spotlight with the most famous family in the world.

A nice listen, nothing overly exciting in the book but still nice to listen to stories about the royals.

The book ended far too soon. I’m sure there are many more anecdotes Mr Arbiter might be able to share in a future edition.

A fascinating story

Fantastic biography of Dickie Arbiter read by himself with many stories from his time at working at the palace. But also loved the flit back in time occasionally to his childhood. If I had one negative then that would be that he tended to talk too quickly at times.

Easy listening

I have enjoyed this. What a wonderful interesting life Dickie has had. I would have liked to hear a little bit more if his interactions with other members of the Royal family such as Margaret Anne and the queen mother though.

Very well read and interesting.
