About this listen
It's Tuesday and god has come back to earth. This all seems very well and good but Sam Dalton could really do without the anxiety - there are a lot of jobs to do and his garden is finally being sorted.
As god makes his presence felt, sending the world and Sam's mum into a panic, life begins to do the one thing our homebody hero really doesn't like: change.
With the media, governments, and the local townspeople forced to adapt to the return of biblical shock and awe, is Sam able to survive the peril and keep his utter sham of a life together?
©2024 Aaron Asadi (P)2024 Aaron AsadiSam Dalton is a gem of a character, and I’d be keen to experience more stories through his eyes. His neuroticism and struggles with everyday tasks, like awkward conversations with the gardener or managing his overbearing mother, are depicted in a way that many neurospicy folks will find both funny and deeply relatable. The plot is a rollercoaster of engaging and consistently funny moments. Sam’s real-time struggles, from the divine horrors of mass murder to the mundane nightmare of taking the bins out, kept me hooked with its humor and relatable scenarios.
Despite the comedic writing style, the book tackles some thought-provoking themes, especially the violent portrayal of the Old Testament God. Some Christians might find this unsettling, but I imagine they’re probably not the target audience. The story also cleverly parallels contemporary issues, like the British government's controversial policies on migrants and asylum seekers. The author’s writing style is wonderfully easy to follow, making you feel like you’re truly inside Sam’s head.
The blend of genuinely sad moments with laugh-out-loud humor is perfect - I literally LOL’d so many times. Sam’s internal monologue during mundane tasks is pure comedic gold. And he is 100% right, Ocean's 12 is indeed a terrible movie!
Overall, this audiobook is a brilliant, humorous, and thought-provoking read that I highly recommend, especially to those who appreciate a neurodivergent perspective and a good laugh. The performance from the narrator is also excellent and does the character of Sam justice.
Brilliant and hilarious
