THE LIFE-AFFIRMING NOVEL ABOUT REAL-LIFE RELIGIOUS FANATICISM AND THE COURAGE OF THREE WOMEN WHO CONFRONT IT, FROM AUTHOR OF BBC2 BETWEEN THE COVERS PICK, ANOTHER LIFE
HOW DO YOU LEAVE A CULT?

Step into a world that lies behind the ordinary front doors of Britain.

A place of loyal wives, obedient children, of faithful (and occasionally faithless) husbands.

Meet Isobel, Jen and Zelda. They know how to please, and they know their place in this world is precarious.

But what happens when they can longer be the person others want them to be – when they stop lying to themselves?

Will each woman stay quiet and keep pleasing?

Or will they stand up and fight?

A story of hope over adversity . . . What each woman goes through will resonate with many. The characters are brought to life in a way that will leave you rooting for them. A touching tale about female friendship, finding strength when you need it most
Distinct and so movingly told that as a reader you really root for them to thrive
A dark, powerful tale of subservience and rebellion that will have you hooked from the very first page
Brilliant - even better than Chapman's debut . . . A powerful eye-opening read that will spark discussion - a perfect book-club pick

This beautiful tale of love, loss and sacrifice will break your heart...With echoes of David Nicholls' One Day and Sally Rooney's novels

What an utterly fantastic book. The characters were so beautifully drawn that I was completely absorbed by them & their unfolding stories. The narrator did them justice.
Absolutely wonderful - I didn’t want to get to the end but I couldn’t stop listening.

I didn’t want it to end !

This is an honest and fair view of this religion. Hopefully it opens up people's eyes to the systemic abuse within and what fundamental changes need to happen. It also sheds light on what trauma members and especially ex members experience almost daily.

I didn’t know this book was about Jehovah Witnesses and I was absolutely fascinated by the three women and how they navigate their faith and disfellowship.

. I think the usual idea of that cult is complete distain and ridicule but the author really unravelled what and why they believe as they do. I worked with a lovely girl years ago and she was bright and intelligent and if we ever did talk about her faith then her answers where almost robotic and panicky like she knew I knew she didn’t really believe all of it. Another person I worked with from that faith was so slimy, he talked to my chest rather than my face and he was an elder. Makes you wonder.

There are good and bad people in all religions, countries, communities etc but I think novels like this are so important as they educate us in something we have preconceptions about or don’t understand.

Beautifully written, complicated characters and very moving.

What a revelation!

This is a great concept for a story and extremely well written. Fascinated by all the female characters ( they were the focus obviously) and their different navigations of the situation
Recommend absolutely and will do for sure
