Summary

The new entry in the popular Jack Haldean series, set in the Roaring Twenties

Charles Otterbourne’s New Century company should have been the perfect partner for Professor Alan Carrington’s radical new gramophone. After all, Charles was not only a leading manufacturer, but also a noted philanthropist. But when murder is the result of their meeting, Jack Haldean takes up the case, in a desperate bid to save a man from the gallows. But what led to the crime? The answer is Off the Record...

Another delightful mystery featuring Jack Haldean

Any additional comments?

Dolores Gordon-Smith has chosen the birth of the recording industry as the background to this mystery featuring the gorgeous (well in my mind anyway) Jack Haldean. As in her previous books she take us back to the golden age of the gentleman detective when murder and mayhem is politely dealt with! The narration by Jonathan Sackville is excellent.

POOR NARRATION

This is a great book, spoiled by a poor narrator. Although a pleasant voice, and an English narration, (not American, for once !!!), I found his articulation poor, combined with speaking too fast some of the time, made it impossible to hear. I ditched the audiobook and read the book instead, and it is a good story. Pity about the narration.
I would happily try more of them if a different narrator.

Timeless

An excellent audiobook. I felt that the characters were well defined, and were engaging. The book could have been written in the Twenties. There was nothing that brought me out of the story, as some contemporary tales set in earlier time periods often do. The narration was well done & suited the story perfectly. A few nice twists & turns at the end finished a pleasant few hours nicely!

Enjoyable

This was an enjoyable story but it felt a bit thin, artificial. It didn’t feel like we were in the 1920s. I’m not an expert, but I suspect that there were a few anachronisms (1. Accounts were kept in books, so the only way of showing the accounts would be to literally “show them the books”. 2. I don’t think an upper-class girl would call her father ‘Dad’; wouldn’t ‘Papa’ be more in keeping with the age? 3. It would be a servant not the gentleman of the house who hung up guests’ coats). I mention these minor issues simply so that the author can, if appropriate, correct them in future books. I’d be happy to hear other books by this author.

Way too long to hold the story together

Started off so well … great story .. but lost its way and went on and on and on and on … got bored senseless….. skipped to the last chapter to find out who did it

Good if you never qork out the killer

On the 1st book, was confused with Jack's determination to confuse with his endless theories. 2nd book (this one)

A bit too twisty

While I enjoyed the story it had too many plot twists and suspects for me to keep up with . The reader kept it interesting and I'll keep an eye out for more from this author
