About this listen
A post-apocalyptic fiction by N.C. Reed.
Billy Todd has always been different. Most people called him odd, and those were the nice people. Though he was born with a learning disability, Billy's parents never allowed him to consider himself disabled. Raised to be self-sufficient, Billy might not be as smart as some, but he was a lot smarter than people realized.
When the entire world is devastated by a plague that kills over 95 percent of the population, Billy is not helpless. Believing he may be the only survivor in his town, he manages to place himself in a good position to survive alone in a new world.

The story had a lot of promise but ran aground on the tub-thumping Americanised idea of the second amendment and other rightward leaning ideas, such as servile women obeying their menfolk. If the main character, Billy Todd is supposed to have Special Needs, or is a bit mentally challenged, I don't know what the heck every other character has going on. It seems like they can only get a plan together if the guy with an apparent learning difficulty comes up with a plan that surpasses their own, that they hadn't thought of. While then praising how clever he really is and how they'd never have thought of such a plan.
I'm in the UK, so this gun business is a bit tricky. I know a lot of rightward leaning gun lovers would like a scenario to develop where they can get to read about how the good guys with an arsenal of guns, took on some bad guys, who barely know which way to point a gun, and murder them all. If that's your thing, there's some of this. A lot of the book is Prepping for the Apocalypse for Dummies. No pun intended on Billy Todd.
Saying all that, it was ok, not bad. Just had a lot of promise wasted.
Good in parts.

And very little attention paid to the emotional effects an event like this would have on the survivors… everyone just seems to dust themselves off and cheerfully carry on with their lives.
Still, one of the better post-apocalyptic genre I’ve encountered.
Why must there always be rape and pillage?
