About this listen

May, 1989. The two nuclear superpowers are finally talking peace, but not everyone in the Soviet Union seeks such resolution. Senior Soviet ministers and generals conduct a coup to seize power and prevent the dissolution of the USSR and the Warsaw Pact. To cover up their plot and capitalize on the resulting chaos, they invade West Germany, setting off a chain of events and the Third World War. Across Europe, soldiers and spies are drawn into the conflict. From NATO headquarters to the front lines, the information is there to prevent nuclear annihilation if only they can find it in time.

Based on the declassified Operations Order 33001, Leo Barron's decades of military intelligence experience allow this military thriller to dive deep into tactics and realistically explore how everything could have changed in 1989.

I’ve always been fascinated by “what if” scenarios, and this imagined Third World War between NATO and the USSR is gripping and believable. Strong characters, nonstop action, and realistic detail make it compelling. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well-written war story.

Set in late 80s this is a detailed military fiction. A lot of weapon system and formation detail, you really need to be up on GENFORCE to keep up with the narrative.

Most of the story is set at the operational and strategic levels and a working knowledge of Germany's geography helps. There is little narrative at the tactical level, but when it drops to this you really need to keep up with weapon platforms and GENFORCE tactics. I found myself having to Google a number of vehicles to keep up.

All this said, if you are from a military background it is an interesting and engaging listen - until the narrator tries to replicate VP. US VP may differ from UK but I doubt every message starts with an offer and has an irrelevant end msg. Also pretty sure in the 80s they didn't have encrypted nets so anyone listening to any of this would be able to tell a LOT about the formations with ease. Don't get me started on the grid references.

Summary - if you are military you will probably enjoy, if you are not it will be difficult to follow.

interesting but probably difficult if not military

Really good listen. was looking for a book similar in scope to RSR. Mostly a ground battle, but we'll researched and written.

Probably the closest book to Red Storm Rising
