Es enthält Beobachtungen, die Maugham auf seinen zahlreichen Reisen gemacht hat, Beobachtungen zu Menschen, Landschaften, Städten, merkwürdigen Begegnungen; es finden sich philosophische Reflexionen und poetologische Überlegungen, kluge prägnante Aphorismen und Sentenzen und nicht zuletzt wunderschöne Miniaturen, die er festhielt, um sie später einmal zu Erzählungen, Romanen oder Theaterstücken auszuarbeiten - und gibt somit auch Einblick in die Schreibwerkstatt eines großen Schriftstellers.
