About this listen

Not Just A Witch is a wonderfully spooky young-fiction title from the award-winning author of Journey to the River Sea, Eva Ibbotson.

'I want you to change the next wicked person you see into a tiger,' demanded Lionel. 'A very large tiger.'

Heckie is not just a witch – she's an animal witch, who wants to make the world a better place by transforming evil people into harmless animals, using her incredible Toe of Transformation and her awesome Knuckle of Power. But when slimy Lionel Knapsack charms Heckie, her magic begins to take a darker direction. Her friends, including a cheese wizard and a boy called Daniel, must come to the rescue . . .

Critic reviews

The perfect alternative for Harry Potter fans.
Eva Ibbotson has assumed the mantle of Roald Dahl.

Heckie is a kind witch who wants to rid the world of evil people. With the help of her familiar who breaks out in pussy boils every time someone evil comes near, and a kind boy named Daniel, she turns nasty people into animals and puts them in the public zoo. It is well read and entertaining. Some of her children's stories are aimed at the age 8+ group, but this one is readily accessible even to the younger audience (my 5 year old is hooked and has no problems following the story, unlike Which Witch which she loved but needed some additional pointers to keep up). It is less gruesome and altogether a gentler story, with a moral edge. The writing, as with all Eva Ibbotson books, is engaging and funny.

An entertaining story for children
