About this listen
Northline is another hugely moving slice of Americana by Willy Vaultin.
Fleeing Las Vegas and her abusive boyfriend, Allison Johnson moves to Reno but finds herself haunted by the mistakes of her past and lacking any self-belief. Her only comfort seems to come from the imaginary conversations she has with her hero, Paul Newman. But, as life crawls on, small acts of kindness do start to reveal themselves, and slowly the chance of a new life begins to emerge.
Full of memorable characters and imbued with a beautiful sense of yearning, Northline is an extraordinary portrait of small-town America and an emotional tour de force.
©2008 Willy Vlautin (P)2018 Blackstone Audio, IncThat story was entertaining . Story of a convict who is turned on to reading. Northline was one of the novels the prison librarian recommended. I thought I would take a punt on it.
It's been one of the best novels I've listened to in years. A great story of survival, of yearning, of hope, of fresh starts and of people determined against many odds to survive and live their lives wherever they fetch up.
Willy Vlautin is a lyricist. This short novel sparkles with sparse, fresh prose.
Listen to this novel. While it might not be life changing for you; it is life affirming.
I confess now I welled up at the end.
