Liebe in Zeiten der industriellen Revolution
Elizabeth Gaskell verkehrte im Viktorianischen England in besten Schriftstellerkreisen. Im Auftrag von Charles Dickens hat die Autorin von Industrieromanen ganz im Stil von Jane Austen folgende Geschichte erzählt: Margaret Hale verschlägt es vom idyllischen Süden in den industriellen Norden, wo sie hautnah den rauen Alltag der Fabrikarbeiter erlebt. Dabei versteht es Mrs. Gaskell ganz vorzüglich, die sozialen Probleme jener Zeit mit einer Liebesgeschichte zu verbinden ohne ins Kitschige abzudriften.
Summary
England inmitten der industriellen Revolution: Die ebenso selbstbewusste wie prinzipientreue Pfarrerstochter Margaret Hale zieht mit ihren Eltern vom ländlichen Süden in eine aufstrebende Metropole im Norden. Nur langsam gewöhnt sie sich an den Rauch, den Lärm und den rauen Umgangston.
