About this listen

Nobody Is Above the Law is an audio drama set in the early 1980s (before cell phones had caught on in America). Billionaire Mayor Bart, a corrupt and somewhat ludicrous politician, is up for reelection. He hopes to win reelection by a huge margin as a stepping stone to a presidential run.

Camille Collins is a psychotherapist, whose fairly ordinary life is thrown into disarray when one of her patients is murdered. Camille doesn’t accept the official police version that this was the work of the notorious Masked Bandit, and when she does some amateur sleuthing, she soon learns that there might be a plan to kill her.

Listed as an audio drama script performed by 'various', this Audible Original is exactly that. Just under one and one half hours in length, even much of that time is taken up with dead air between scene changes (all 48 of them), each new chapter heralded by a really annoying horn.
The basic story is interesting: the death of a woman during the time leading up to a mayoral election leads to cover up and corruption and the dialogue is variable but acceptable. The 'various' cast ranges from good to acceptable. But it is the all too frequent scene changes between short chargers - One of which was only one word in length - which totally distracts from the smooth production of the play. It feels much more like a first read through of a new script: a work in progress rather than a finished production.

Not bad if readers have time on their hands or are likely to be interrupted frequently and unexpectedly, but watch out for that awful electronic bell between each very short chapter. I received a freely gifted complimentary copy of Nobody is Above the Law, at my request, via Free Audiobook
