About this listen

From one of the UK's biggest crime writers - the man brought you the bestselling Inspector McLean novels - comes a phenomenal new series guaranteed to have your heart in your mouth.

Undercover ops are always dangerous, but DC Constance Fairchild never expected things to go this wrong.

Returning to their base of operations, an anonymous office in a shabby neighbourhood, she finds the bloodied body of her boss, and friend, DI Pete Copperthwaite. He's been executed - a single shot to the head.

In the aftermath, it seems someone in the Met is determined to make sure that blame for the wrecked operation falls squarely on Con's shoulders. She is cut loose and cast out, angry and alone with her grief... right until the moment someone also tries to put a bullet through her head.

There's no place to hide, and no time to cry.

This audiobook contains an exclusive introduction to Constance Fairchild from James Oswald.

Great narration, excellent character development and looking forward to the next one! As enjoyable as Inspector MacLean

great start to a new series!

I was so attached to the characters in the earlier books that I didn’t think I would like a new series with different characters, but I loved it. I like the slightly supernatural element to the books and I’m pleased that the cat theme has continued in this series too. It was reassuring to (briefly) encounter a well loved character from the Inspector McLean series and I hope that will continue in future books.

Part of the attraction of the first series was the wonderful narration by Ian Hanmore. This book is set mainly in England and a very different narrator was required. I think Rose Akroyd did very well, by the second or third chapter I was totally immersed in the book and entirely comfortable with her narration. I think she was a good choice, she suits the main character and she deals effortlessly with a wide range of characters and accents.

Overall this was an excellent start to the new series and I hope we do not have to wait too long for the next book from James Oswald.

I really enjoyed this book, I've listened to all the Inspector McLean books so I am a fan of the author. The "cameo" by Madame Rose I really enjoyed. Looking forward to book 2.
