Summary

Theo Jennings is a young auctioneer at the Thoroughbred sales ring in Newmarket. The October yearling sales are where the big money exchanges hands in frenzied auctions – millions of Guineas paid for horses that are as yet unnamed, untested and have never taken a step on the track. It's the greatest gamble in all of horseracing, and one that can end in ruin.

Theo has just made the biggest sale of his life when he overhears a secret conversation between the two bidders – can they really have colluded to fix the price of his big sale? When that same horse is found dead the next morning, he has no choice but to investigate, even against the wishes of his boss. But the more he uncovers, the less he can trust the people around him.

The higher the stakes, the greater the risk. And in the bloodstock game, the ultimate price can be murder...

'Another solid, fun novel in this franchise. Fans of horse racing, and good old-fashion thrillers, will enjoy this one.' (Red Carpet Crash)

'This is certainly a crime novel written in the tradition of Dick Francis.' (Deadly Pleasures)

Another classic

Kept me on my toes whilst remaining so familiar and comfortable. The Francis mystery universe is yet again brought to life with excellent writing and narration.

Quite a technical book in places

A good story but I felt it was sometimes held back by lots of detailed explanations that while important rather stunted the flow of the fiction.

Disappointed overall

I almost returned this book as Martin Jarvis was monotonous and didn’t engage me at all. I decided to persevere.
The story was decent enough but I found the whole intertwining of the Soham murders an unnecessary distraction.
The character of Janis was insipid and I found myself wishing she’d just disappear.
It would have been much better to remove the Janis subplot and spend more time on the real mystery.

Disappointed all round

Story line was very stop start with a lot of unnecessary padding. I admire Martin Jarvis as an actor, but found his voice very annoying as a narrator. I struggled to listen to it to the end, but I did, in the vain hope it would get better. The ending consisted of going over the whole story again as if the reader was too stupid to have understood it the first time round. I am a big fan of Dick Francis and won't let this one disappoibtment put me off but I will avoid Martin Jarvis again.
