About this listen

From New York Times best-selling author Erik Larson comes his first venture into fiction, an otherworldly tale of intrigue and the impossible that marshals his trademark approach to nonfiction to create something new: a ghost story thoroughly grounded in history.

Pioneering psychologist William James leads an expedition to a remote isle in search of answers after a family inexplicably vanishes. Was the cause rooted in the physical world...or were there forces more paranormal and sinister at work? Available only on audio, because as Larson says, ghost stories are best told aloud.

A group of researchers sets sail for the Isle of Dorn in the North Atlantic in 1905 to explore the cause of several mysterious disappearances, most notably a family of four who vanished without a trace after a weeklong holiday on the island. Led by Professor James, a prominent member of the Society for Psychical Research, they begin to explore the island’s sole cottage and surrounding landscape in search of a logical explanation.

The idyllic setting belies an undercurrent of danger and treachery, with raging storms and unnerving discoveries adding to the sense of menace. As increasingly unexplainable events unfold, the now-stranded investigators are unsure whether they can trust their own eyes, their instincts, one another - or even themselves.

Erik Larson has written a terrifying tale of suspense, underpinned with actual people and events. Created specifically to entertain audio listeners, this eerie blend of the ghostly and the real will keep listeners captivated till the blood-chilling end.

Featuring Erik Larson reading his Notes for a Narrator.

...in every sense of the word. As meticulously researched and beautifully written as you'd expect from Erik Larson, with his solid background of "real life death, disaster and destruction", and exceptionally well narrated by Julian Rhind-Tutt, I simply cannot fault this delightfully entertaining story.

In my opinion, it is stylistically and atmosphericaly reminiscent of Algernon Blackwood's "The Willows", William Hope Hodgson's "House on the Borderland" and Shirley Jackson's "...Hill House" (which the author actually makes reference to himself in his own epilogue), and I would strongly urge anyone who has read - and enjoyed - any and/or all of the three aforementioned novels to buy this immediately - I promise you you won't be disappointed.

Perfectly Haunting...

Great story and a great narrator. I thoroughly enjoyed it and would highly recommend it.

Loved it !!!

Not bad; an amiable ghost story slightly undermined by an annoying main character and several Americanisms supposedly coming from a British person in 1905; unevenly paced (kept waiting for it to get going then realised it was almost over); nice mysterious ending/solution not really given enough space to breathe.

Passes the time pleasantly

A good supernatural story. I thought it was going to be a typical gothic ghost story but I didn’t find it so, it was different in my opinion. The ending did leave me feeling a quite spooked but I don’t want to give any spoilers away!

Enjoyed

Generally good overall although you could tell in places it was a first piece of published fiction, however, it was well narrated. The central premise - a group of people on an isolated haunted island- is exciting and appealing to a lover of gothic horror like myself. The beginning was a bit slow with a little too much 'scientific pontification' but that could be treated as successfully recreating a sci-fi feel of Victorian/Edwardian literature. It picks up in terms of action and pace in the final act. My only other criticism was the odd Americanism as I believe the narrator was meant to be British (e.g. 'vest' rather than 'waistcoat'). The author's note at the end was quite interesting in how it connected the novel with real life events.

A good first piece of fiction
