About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

The chilling and compulsive new novel from the number one best-selling author.

We are each our own devil, and we make this world our hell.

It's been 17 months since the Bloodsmith butchered his first victim, and Operation Maypole is still no nearer catching him. The media is whipping up a storm and the top brass are demanding results, but the investigation is sinking fast.

Now isn't the time to get distracted with other cases, but Detective Sergeant Lucy McVeigh doesn't have much choice. When Benedict Strachan was just 11, he hunted down and killed a homeless man. No one's ever figured out why Benedict did it, but now, after 16 years, he's back on the streets again—battered, frightened, convinced a shadowy 'They' are out to get him, and begging Lucy for help.

It sounds like paranoia, but what if he's right? What if he really is caught up in something bigger and darker than Lucy's ever dealt with before? What if the Bloodsmith isn't the only monster out there? And what's going to happen when Lucy goes after them?

"A magnetic mix of creepy places, dark humour, horror and violence." (Sun)

Mucking fuddled to say the least, what has happened? I’m a huge Stuart MacBride fan. I ordered the signed copy of the book last year and was so excited when it arrived but kept putting it down as it was gripping me. So decided to try the audio version as I had listened to the majority of the other novels. Firstly, was disappointed not to hear Steve Worsley or Ian Hanmore, but on I went. I found myself tuning out to her voice which when listening to an audible book isn’t the thing to happen but I tried to keep the faith. For me, the storyline and narration wasn’t what I loved about Stuart MacBride, where was the humour? I didn’t warm to any of the characters and after 18.5 hours can’t really name them either. I’m so sorry to be critical as no way can I do better but please please can we have some more Logan and Roberta?

Weird but not in a good way

Well what a read. I have to confess that I stopped three quarters of the way through and started again because I really couldn’t get my head around it. Glad I did. I had faith in Stuart. I hadn’t spent years reading his books NOT to believe it would come good. Like the “heroine” he has gone dark. What an imagination to conjure such a cast of characters. Well worth the read, as always. Chalk up another gold star to Mr MacBride!

Stuart MacBride goes above and below!

Fo7nd it really difficult to get into but pleases that I persevered. Suspend reality & enjoy the chaos.

Worth persisting with

I love Stuart MacBride but I couldn't finish this particular book - it annoyed me hearing 'the Dunc' nickname and his anger at the inequality of life. The characters in the past books have bern likeable and grew with the stories into 'friends' but I just felt I didn't know or like the Dunc tbh and it just put me off.

So Disappointed

Sometimes, it’s all about trust. I totally trust this author too entertain; and this book doesn’t disappoint. From the moment I started cold granite, I have been a huge fan, and of course, I miss well loved characters (they are like friends), but here are some new people to meet. Thank you Mr McBride

Fantastic! Hopefully the start of a whole new series
