Summary
Silent Witness meets shifters in this steamy, high stakes omegaverse detective novel.
Pember McArthur's life is falling apart, one horribly unhinged mother at a time. With no pack, few friends, and even fewer family, he must learn to survive as a lone omega in a town that's still reeling from a recent sex trafficking scandal. Landing a job as a crime scene investigator, he gets thrust into a world of violence, murder, and one smoking hot Detective Sergeant who is hell bent on being the most miserable fucker around.
When alphas start turning up dead in a string of bizarre and seemingly unrelated attacks, Pember and DS Blake Smith must work together to catch the person responsible. However, when the number of bodies starts to grow, it becomes clear that dead men tell no tales, and the police have no leads. As the case unfolds, both come to learn that death is not the end, but the beginning of something altogether unexpected.
©2025 C T WhistleOk... this was more like what I expected book one to be and I can see the improvement in the writing between book one/the authors debut and this. That isn't me saying book one was bad because it wasn't I had a great time with it but this delivered more on the aspects that I felt were lacking last time. The relationship buildup was tender and full of chemistry and felt more of a slow-burn than book one which was nice. Their was a little friction between them to begin with but that soon gives way into this easygoing relationship where they discover they have alot in common and the banter between them was great. The spice felt more organic here too and less driven by the biology at play within this omegaverse, whereas the physical aspect of Oliver and Lucas from book one felt very dictated by Oliver's heat, here with Pember whilst that obviously plays a factor it felt more driven by their romantic fellings/connection which was an improvement imo.
The investigative element was decent if obvious to me and it lost its momentum towards the end with the conclusion being unfortunately rushed and a bit lacklustre given the potential and the same goes for the plot point with Pembers mum. I kind of expected these stories to have a more overall noir vibe and I think that is down to the stunning cover art of these books... they just give those vibes when you look at them... and i know I've fallen into the "You shouldn't judge a book by its cover" trap here but sometimes that can't be helped. 😂 On the whole this was an enjoyable and engaging read with likeable characters that have good development and chemistry, banter and spice with a decent murder mystery element to it. I once again enjoyed the on point British writing style and nuanced sarcasm and I'm looking forward to book 3. 🌶🌶🌶

This is a great continuation of the series, although the first story still has the edge, as far as I'm concerned. Refreshingly and unapologetically British with a level of swearing that might possibly cause offence if you're not used to it.
Derek Duvall continues to read excellently.

Pem is such a cutie, and i enjoyed seeing him venturing out on his own, putting together his house and learning that hes capable of so much more. His hobbies with his cooking and back garden brewing again such a cutie.
All in all lots of found family, cute pets, grumpy alpha, yearning and heats, cameos of Luke/Ollie and the kids and cop work, tho not nearly enough tea and biscuits!
The only thing letting this down a little for me was some storylines not having been fully wrapped up/or were rushed?
At the top of my head we had:
1. Blakes strained relationship with his family - i wished they circled back to Pem meeting them and Blake reconciling with his parents
2. Pem and Blake mating, i think this should have been done earlier in the book not as an rushed ending scene as by then i wanted the conclusion of the other things
3. The murder case and the 'big bad' - with the way it ended up, I think it could have been concluded as lot earlier. Like if Maya wanted to be caught to spread the choas and message then do it in a big way, but instead she hid for days/weeks? to then let all of them be caught even though she knew it was a set up? hhmmmm...
4. What happened with Duncan?
What about Samamtha, how did she clock on to Maya and how did they corner her?
Anyway those points dont take away from my loving this series and i look forward to the next book! Alpha on Alpha anyone?
Really loved Pember and Blake together
