Karl Jaspers interpreta esta contradicción diciendo que Nietzsche jamás llegó a asumir las ideas cristianas. Por lo tanto, tampoco tuvo necesidad de rechazar nada que previamente hubiera aceptado. Sin embargo, la fuerza de estos impulsos cristianos, aun despojados de contenido, sí que constituyó la base del pensamiento de Nietzsche hasta su filosofía tardía.
