Summary

New York Times best-selling author Michael Koryta, the "master" (Stephen King) of American thriller writing, returns with an electrifying new novel set in Maine about a mother seeking to regain custody of her children after a terrible trial tears their family apart.

Once a wife, mother, and witness to a gruesome crime, Leah Trenton was extended a miraculous olive branch in the form of the state's protected witness program. But for this second chance at life, Leah would have to leave behind her Midwestern roots to the northernmost tip of Maine. Alone and isolated along the banks of the Allagash River, she is determined to focus on the present, on her reclaimed future, but the demons of her past, are relentlessly chipping away at Leah's protected hideaway.

Meanwhile, in the wake of their father's untimely death, Leah's children are sent to stay with her, though they are desperate to return back home. They embark on a cross country homeward journey but before they reach, danger finds them and it is Leah who must come out of her seclusion to search for and protect her children.

Told with the deft plotting and enthralling storytelling of a genre master, these two captivating chase narratives will converge along the rugged Allagash River, in the wilds of Maine, where the wills, morals, and ingenuity of a broken family will be tested against all odds.

Unfinished business

Never Far Away is the latest heart pounding action thriller from award-winning and New York Times best-selling author Michael Koryta. The story follows a woman and estranged mother who, at the beginning, lives a quiet and secluded life after she is placed in witness protection by the federal government. But, when a tragic event forces her to come out of hiding in order to take care of the children she had to abandon a long time ago, things get heated up and really complicated.

Filled with the same level of attention to details, brilliant writing, vivid characters and fascinating scenarios, Never Far Away keeps the listener entertained and on the edge of their seat for the entire 12 hours duration of the audio production.

One of the best and respected narrators in the audiobooks industry, Robert Petkoff delivers another superb performance with Never Far Away. He keeps the action going, the story flowing and at the same time he manages to bring all the lifelike characters into sharp contrast in the listeners' mind. His performance is so good that at times I was really freaked out by the unsettling lines of dialogue. Robert Petkoff makes you forget that at least half of this story should have been narrated by a female actor. Yes, he is that good!

Gripping from the first chapter, superbly written, vividly portrayed and immensely entertaining, Never Far Away is one of the best stories I experienced so far this year! It seems that the spell of author and narrator always delivers the highest amount of quality content for their millions of fans.

Love Koryta!!!

Another excellent survival thriller from Michael Koryta, this latest entry features ingredients that made me a fan of his long ago in a fresh stew: an intelligent unpredictable villain, a kick-ass heroine straight out of a 90’s Ashley Judd movie, heroic kids worthy of a Stephen King novel, a remote and deadly landscape and a good dog.
Great entertainment, kept me up reading into the night. ENJOY!

Written to Cash in on the Movie?

I’ve read all of Michael Koryta’s books & he’s one of my favorite authors but this story fell flat for me. It feels like it was hastily written to take advantage of the release of his movie starring Angelina Jolie. It starts off slowly without any background, the story was confusing & I simply didn’t care about the characters or what happened to them. I hope his next book is as good as The Cypress House or So Cold the River.

Save your credit

Trite, dull, predictable, poorly narrated. Not a good book -- I would exchange it if I could.

Another good one

Mr. Koryta has rapidly become one of my favorite authors. This book doesn’t disappoint.
My favorite is still “Those who wish me Dead.”
The villain characters he writes are creepy and amazing. This book has a couple of characters that you just can’t figure out whether they are good or bad even after the end. This could easily be a series, which I know he doesn’t do much.

LOVE HIS BOOKS. I WANT A Dax Blackwell book.

It’s a great book. Wish Koryta could’ve tied up the loose ends a bit more. What happened to Nina’s friend Ed, for example. I assume he lived. Whatever. It’s a great book. Petkoff is superb narrator.
