This book raises more questions about mental health and schizophrenia than answers. It is clear that the field of mental health is far from an exact science and diagnosis and treatment are both problematic. How often do psychiatrists agree on the same diagnosis ? How often are the labels assigned to patients changed ? Does medication improve patients or make them worse ? You would think that a book that raises more questions than answers is not useful but a sceptical and questioning essay on the “science” of mental health serves a purpose. Much in the field is still in dispute !

The Inexact Science of Mental Health

This book provides a lot of evidence to question the diagnosis of schizophrenia and points out that medication for the condition often gives the patient another illness.
It is a must read for any psychiatrist or GP

I’ve worked in and around mental health in a variety of settings all my life. This book echoed my beliefs. But the stories made me cry. I have heard many, but still the cost of ‘so called mental health’ is heartbreaking. Good listen, very moving.

I thought I was hardened!

As William Blake once put it, “whether we make a heaven or hell of earth, ‘tis the mind that makes it so“.
I noticed that when the paper book comes out, it will be called “everything you want to know about mental health that is wrong“ which probably gives a much clearer example of what this book is about than its current title. It’s difficult to say a book about people with significant mental health problems, their stories of what their close ones have been through and then a look at current issues in the field of mental health perhaps shouldn’t be a must read and enjoyable, page turner of a read but this book really is as well as being a must read for anyone who has experience of mental health problems or love someone or cares for someone with such a difficulty. It’s also a must read for everyone so that we can understand people with more empathy and understanding who suffer such afflictions of psychosis that impacts on their health and well being. The stories really illuminate what mental illness really is. After each story an area of mental health is explored such as insight, stigma and discrimination, diagnosis (a slippery field), causes (there are usually triggers in our environment that impact on people who can be most prone (but good luck to ever knowing who that could be)), chemical medication as treatment (works and can save some but can be as debilitating as the illness itself for others - changing the make up of your own mind as shown in scans, terrible side-effects and dependency), delusions and other approaches to supporting others. A really interesting fact is that people are more likely to get better in developing countries than in developed countries where we have all the knowledge and treatment but possibly more discrimination. Interestingly enough, many delusions are based on some form of religion, and in societies that are more secular, those delisions become less frequent and as in Romania’s case, when the religion comes back into fashion, along comes the delusions also. Anywhere there is a lot to think about with this book.

Not only should everybody read this book, but this book is also really good read. I also agree with the authors views on stigma, it’s more important that we know what to do and how to help rather than just being aware that people have mental health problems that couldn’t severely incapacitate and even lead to death at far too young and age. Really recommended and had the paper back version come out before Christmas, a lot of presents would’ve been sorted.

An illuminating book on mental health

I loved this book , the narrator / author uses current research and patient stories to present many new ways to think about mental health. A beneficial book for everyone involved within the mental illness bubble.

Humanistic book based on current research .
