Summary

Der junge, grüblerisch veranlagte Erlendur Sveinsson hat vor kurzem seine Tätigkeit als Streifenpolizist in Reykjavík aufgenommen. In den Nachtschichten lernt er die dunklen Seiten der isländischen Hauptstadt kennen: betrunkene Autofahrer, häusliche Gewalt, Einbrüche, Drogenhandel. Ihn bewegt das Schicksal von Randfiguren der Gesellschaft.

An einem Wochenende wird ein Obdachloser in einem Tümpel am Stadtrand ertrunken aufgefunden, und eine junge Frau verschwindet spurlos. Beide Fälle lassen Erlendur keine Ruhe, und er beginnt auf eigene Faust zu ermitteln...
