About this listen

NOW A MAJOR FILM STARRING RACHEL WEISZ AND SAM CLAFIN

'I threw the piece of paper on the fire. She saw it burn . . . '

Orphaned at an early age, Philip Ashley is raised by his benevolent cousin, Ambrose. Resolutely single, Ambrose delights in making Philip his heir, knowing he will treasure his beautiful Cornish estate. But Philip's world is shattered when Ambrose sets off on a trip to Florence. There he falls in love and marries. Then he suddenly dies in suspicious circumstances.

In almost no time at all, the new widow—Philip's cousin Rachel—turns up in England. Despite himself, Philip is drawn to this beautiful, sophisticated, mysterious woman like a moth to the flame. And yet . . . might she have had a hand in Ambrose's death?

One of my favourites. This was actually the first ever book I read by Daphne, first reading when I was about thirteen. It has a special place in my heart.

superb narration

Du Maurier never disappoints as she delves into the dark side of life and love. with a slight nod to the gothic novel, using weather to instill a sense of foreboding ajd the wonderful prologue, the scene is set for poor naive, gullible Philip Ashley.
a great read that kept ke wanting to know more and yet already predicting the outcome.

A sinister tale

Wonderful piece of writting. Has kept my cold days full of enjoyment, wonder and awe.

Stunning

Oh, look, we know Du Maurier was a genius, but this is one of her less-known novels and it is just....heaven. Writing that transports us into rattling carriages, dusty courtyards, smoky libraries, sinister boudoirs and gleaming saddles. She has the power to take us back into time and is this the world's first unreliable first person narrator? I didn't want it to end.

Quietly terrifying, and breathtaking writing
