Sam McPheeters championed many different versions. Over the course of two decades, he fronted Born Against, released dozens of records and fanzines, and toured 17 times across the northern hemisphere. In this collection of essays, profiles, criticism, and personal history, he examines the diverse realms he intersected - New York hardcore, Riot Grrrl, Gilman street, the hidden enclaves of Olympia, New England, and downtown Los Angeles - and the forces of mental illness and creative inspiration that drove him, and others, in the first place.

Mutations should be a mandatory companion piece to American Hardcore. Where that book points firmly to the 'golden age', Mutations has more depth, insight and clarity as to what being a participant and observer in this sub culture actually means. A thought provoking and brutally honest assessment of an often glorified movement. 'The Debate' chapter is the highlight here, a first hand look at his experience in Born Against and repercussions shown in it's effects on the author's mental health. Hearing Sam McPheeters narrate this makes it feel much more real and has a pain still real decades later. A fantastic and compelling listen, this gets an automatic 10/10 for having a chapter on Die Kreuzen!
